Martin Sheen 1940

“If you’re going to make a contribution, if you’re going to do anything of value, it’s got to cost you something,”

The renowned actor as you’ve never heard him before. He has appeared in over 100 films, including Apocalypse Now. He’s best known on television as President Bartlet in The West Wing. But Martin Sheen, born and still legally named Ramón Estévez, has had another lesser-known life as a spiritual seeker and activist. He returned to a deep and joyful Catholic faith after a crisis at the height of his fame in mid-life. He’s been arrested over 60 times in vigils and protests. “Piety is something you do alone,” he says. “True freedom, spirituality, can only be achieved in community.”

*Make a contribution today. Do something of value. But it’s got to cost you something. Watch the West Wing for motivation.

*Think of getting started with TB12. You could ignore the BODY and FOOD of 365DOLF if you become an avid follower of TB12. It is expensive though.

Tony Bennett 1926

When MTV News caught up with the legendary Bennett immediately after the tribute, he spoke fondly of Winehouse’s incredible talent and their time together recording their duet (and the “Rehab” singer’s final recording), “Body and Soul.” Bennett then spoke of how tragic he thought her death was, saying that he wished he’d been able to pass along a few words of wisdom before it was too late.

*Pass along a few words of wisdom to someone today, before it is too late. Listen to Body and Soul for motivation.

Elisha Otis 1811

Elisha Graves Otis didn’t invent the elevator, he invented something perhaps more important-the elevator safety device that eventually made high-rise buildings practical.

*Rack your brain for what you could invent to make something safer or more practical. I wonder how many people rode in elevators before there was an actual safety device.

James Hetfield 1963 – listen to Metallica

 ” . . . And Justice For All”

Small businesses often think that they need to broaden their product or service offerings to appeal to many different demographic groups and types of consumers. But, it’s much better for your small business to follow Metallica’s example and make sure your offerings appeal to a particular niche. It may seem counterintuitive, but capitalizing on a specific niche allows you to create a sense of deep sense of community and brand loyalty.

It’s always easier to get customers that already love you to buy more than it is to court and convert new customers.

So, Metallica doesn’t try to capitalize on the various music trends and release dubstep or rap songs, in addition to their albums and tours. Instead, they sell products that shape a full lifestyle for their target audience, offering complementary products for their fans like shirts, wearable merch and posters . . . they even license their brand for pinball machines.

*Listen to Metallica to help you capitalize on your specific niche. Enter Sandman.

Martha Stewart 1941 – tequila soaked watermelon wedges

More than a dozen years after serving a prison sentence for lying to investigators about a stock sale, Martha Stewart has opened up about the “horrifying experience,” saying nothing good came out it.

“It was horrifying, and no one — no one — should have to go through that kind of indignity, really, except for murderers, and there are a few other categories,” the 76-year-old domestic maven told Katie Couric on the former TODAY anchor’s podcast. “But no one should have to go through that. It’s a very, very awful thing.”

National Watermelon Day recognizes the refreshing summertime treat enjoyed at picnics and fairs! Watermelon is 92% water, which is why it is so satisfying in the summer heat.

*Enjoy these Martha Stewart tequila soaked watermelon wedges on a hot August day. Always tell the truth.

Peter O’Toole 1932

While shooting The Lion in Winter, O’Toole cut off the top of his finger in a boating accident. He dropped the finger in some brandy before pushing it back into place and wrapping with a bandage. Removing the bandage weeks later he found he’d put it back the wrong way round.

*Jerry Garcia lost a finger yesterday and today it’s Peter O’Toole. If this doesn’t give you a conversation starter, then I don’t know what will. And… no excuses today!

Skylar Diggins 1990

“I start working on my core strength and balance right after the season, using kettle bells, medicine balls and battle ropes,” says Diggins. “I really want to strengthen my body and get ready for my individual workouts and for the season.”

*Get with your trainer today and let them know you want to work on strength and balance by using kettle balls, medicine balls, and battle ropes just like Skylar Diggins. Play basketball and be the point guard.

Carroll O’Connor 1924

Non-bigots understood the intention of the series and found confirmation of their views in the jokes. Carroll O’Connor in real life was an outspoken defender of liberal and civil rights causes—as was the show’s producer, Norman Lear.

*When I spoke at my father’s funeral, I compared him to Archie Bunker, but he evolved into a much better person. Don’t be like Archie Bunker – be like the man who played him, Carroll O’Connor – a defender of civil rights.

Wes Craven 1939 – watch Scream

Never give up. Neve Campbell plays the main character, Sidney Prescott. Sidney has had an extremely challenging life. When the first movie in the Scream franchise opens, her mother has been dead for a year, the victim of a brutal murder. Soon after the start of the film, Sidney is continually pursued by a ghost-masked killer (through four movies eventually!). The killer repeatedly tries to stab her, hits her, knocks her down, chases her, and, of course, threatens her. But Sidney never gives up. She fights back through all four movies and ends up killing the killers in each and every one.

*Never give up and watch Scream for inspiration.

Francis Scott Key 1779

When inspiration strikes, take action. Immediately. Key started to write key lines in the moment. Imagine if he waited to pen the poem until later when he was safely at home. We likely would never have heard of it. If you’re half asleep with a great idea and think, I’ll do that tomorrow, think again.

*Take action today. You’ve been waiting long enough.

*Do this Aquaman workout, go swimming, and then eat lean meat and green veggies. Save the Guinness for a nightcap.

Herman Melville 1819

Image result for herman melville

We may read Melville’s Moby-Dick as a story of the soul’s pilgrimage towards redemption and Ishmael’s “damp, drizzly November” in his soul as a metaphor for the holy longing. This essay sees into and sees through Moby-Dick as a pilgrimage.

“Without doubt, Ronald Rolheiser’s The Holy Longing is one of the best books about Christian spirituality that has been published in many a year. Its insights are just what all of us need at this moment of history. It blends the old and the new in ways that few others can do”

*Read Moby Dick and read The Holy Longing by Ron Rolheiser to help your soul’s pilgrimage towards redemption.

Avi Arad 1948

Arad’s work in Hollywood began to pay off when New Line released “Blade,” starring Wesley Snipes as a vampire slayer. Blade sold $133 million of tickets worldwide. Marvel made only $25,000, but the deal spawned other deals.

Arad: Exactly. Everyone said (the first Blade film was) unlikely to succeed, it was a comic book movie, it was R-rated, but it was great. Shocks are good.

*Shock is good. What can you do to shock people by how successful you are? Read Marvel comics for inspiration.

Jerry Garcia 1942 – listen to the Grateful Dead

Jerry Garcia Life Lesson #2: Improvise

Jerry’s brother, Tiff, accidentally removed his little brother’s middle finger with an axe when Jerry was young. Thus, Jerry literally did not have the finger-picking ability of other able-handed guitarists. So, he made do with what he had to work with. He improvised.

*Make do with what you have to work with today and listen to the Grateful Dead. And treat your children well.

Dom DeLuise 1933 – Dom’s Mom’s meatballs

Image result for dom deluise him

A 1980 movie starring DeLuise as a fat man on a diet, Fatso, was generally panned by critics and avoided by audiences, but remains an unfairly neglected gem.

*Enjoy Dom’s mom’s meatballs while watching her son as “Captain Chaos” in The Cannonball Run.

And Cherry Garcia Ice Cream for dessert. Don’t forget to wash it all down with a Guinness.
