Chuck Noll 1932

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Chuck Noll loved collecting and drinking fine wines, a tip to the remarkable persona of one of the best coaches of all time. He was complex, sophisticated and classy, and like a fine wine, Noll aged one of the NFL’s greatest football dynasties in the 1970s.

No one wanted to say it, but they couldn’t help but notice. The man with the formidable intellect and voracious thirst for knowledge had slowed, he seemed less sharp, less focused, less mentally acquisitive.

She took his hands in hers and delivered the news: “The doctor says you have Alzheimer’s disease.”

Chuck looked back at her. There was a long moment of silence. And she could see him weighing the reality, and the implications, and a life-time of things that had been left unsaid.

Then he squeezed her hands tightly and looked back into Marianne’s eyes, with the steady, determined gaze she’s seen so many times before. He had just one thing he had to tell her.

“I will . . . never . . . forget who you are,” he said. Then they embraced and dissolved into tears.

January Jones 1978

January Jones is famous for her portrayal of Betty Draper in Mad Men but is also in the X-Men film, First Class, in which she plays Emma Frost (aka White Queen), the mutant that has strong telepathic powers and super strength too in her diamond form.

In 2009 January Jones was criticized for being too thin. However, she defended her figure then, and confirmed that she eats well;

“I’m from South Dakota, so meat, potatoes, carbs.”

January did do some limited weight training and bodyweight exercises for the role once filming started, just to give a little more muscle tone in the upper body. Typical exercises included pushups on a stability ball, dumbbell curls and rows.

*Like the Emma Frost version of January Jones, do 3 sets of push ups on a stability ball, dumbbell curls, and rows. Then go home and watch an episode of Mad Men to unwind.

Francisco Suarez 1548

During the seventeenth century the Iberian Jesuit Francisco Suárez was considered one of the greatest philosophers of the age. He was the last great Scholastic thinker and profoundly influenced the thought of his contemporaries within both Catholic and Protestant circles.

“The church’s object is the health of each individual soul and its spiritual salvation, as opposed to the state whose jurisdiction is solely temporal, concerned with the common good in secular life.”

*Regardless of your thoughts on religion, Use the church as a safe haven from the ugliness of politics.  Attend church with an open heart and clear mind, and as an escape for a few hours each week.

King C. Gillette 1855

The Gillette disposable razor was a unique invention that revolutionized more than the shaving industry. A salesman, King Gillette, invented the disposable razor and formed a company to sell those razors. His invention and marketing techniques created business concepts that are still used today.

Some of the lessons learned from Gillette’s life include:

  • Sometimes youthful ideas are incorrect
  • Keep your eyes open for opportunities
  • Good ideas come from common problems
  • Don’t give up on your idea
  • Spend money to get the market

*I love bookstores. Sometimes I spend hours just strolling around a Barnes and Nobles. I have never seen a book like 365DOLF. There are self-help books and workout journals. There are daily prayer journals. But I honestly think that 365DOLF is truly unique and will be a best seller hardcover book with a daily workbook/journal to go along with it. The disposable razor of a game plan for life.

Any time that you have a problem this year, ask yourself how you could make money off of fixing that problem.

A common problem for me as a teacher is writing passes for students. I want to create an app that students can use as a pass. All of my students have smart phones and this would be a way to use them for good – not porn.

“Mr. Corleone never asks a second favor once he’s refused the first, understood?”

Life Lesson: It’s not easy for many people to ask for help, so when someone does you should do your best to accommodate them. And not just because you could wake up next to a horse’s head.

*As Diane Keaton and Robert Duvall share a birthday, they also share some scenes in The Godfather. Ironically, Talia Shire and Al Pacino share a birthday on 4/25. Watch The Godfather today and part 2 on April 25.

Bradley Cooper 1975 – Herdwick Lamb

He seduced Michelin-starred British chef Marcus Wareing with his perfect plating technique while decking out a Herdwick Lamb dish.

“When he dressed that plate of lamb, that was my culinary orgasm with Bradley Cooper,” says Wareing, who trained Cooper in the kitchen for his latest film.

*Work on your cooking skills today. After watching Bradley Cooper in Burnt, try making herdwick lamb just like he did. Be careful when dressing the plate. You have a lot of options of Bradley Cooper movies to watch while enjoying it – Wedding Crashers, The Hangover, and A Star is Born just to name a few.

Sir Isaac Newton 1643

Image result for sir isaac newton

Newton grew up with a vulnerable and eccentric character besides having a low self-esteem, and he was someone who only uncommonly developed any close relationships. On review it is argued that his distrust and suspicions of others, and the fear that he might be harmed by criticism and his discoveries stolen, followed from his mother’s separation from him in childhood and not, as has been claimed, from the developmental disorder of Asperger’s syndrome.

*One of the greatest minds in world history was warped by his mother, so don’t stress if your mother has you in therapy.  If you’re not in therapy because of your mother, look into it.

Kris Bryant 1992

Kris Bryant left no doubt about who should be the National League’s Rookie of the Year, unanimously winning the award after proving he’s a franchise player for the Cubs.

Hardest workout you’ve ever done:
In college, my team did the CrossFit WOD Murph. It was ridiculously hard, but it definitely got me in shape.

For time:
1 mile Run
100 Pull-ups
200 Push-ups
300 Squats
1 mile Run

In memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005.

*Try doing the “Murph” today. Any parts that you can’t do, focus on improving those areas this year.

Louis Braille 1809

Image result for louis braille

Louis was excited about this new way to read. He spent most of his free time learning the system. He knew it would have to be made simpler. He also had to find a way to include numbers and punctuation. So in his spare time and late at night, Louis worked hard to improve the captain’s system. With a pointed instrument called a stylus and a wooden writing board with paper, Louis continued working on it. After two years of work, when Louis was 15, he finally created a new code. It was easier to learn and quicker to read.

Volunteers are a critical part of the Learning Ally team.

R.E.M. founding members Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe played their first show on April 5, 1980, at a friend’s birthday party in an abandoned church in Athens, Georgia. From that point forward until 2011 when they decided to call it a day, the band released fifteen albums, toured the world, won multiple Grammys, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and have left a lasting legacy of great songs that defined an era.

*Listen to R.E.M right before you enter a deep sleep tonight.

Graham Elliot 1977 – butternut squash soup

What’s your favorite dish you’ve ever made?
I don’t really have a signature dish per se because I don’t really like to be locked into something like that, but I really enjoy making soups because I really feel that they are heartwarming and soulful. And you can do fun things — like we’ll be able to do a butternut squash bisque, but instead it’s like clarified and clear, with a cinnamon marshmallow that you pour the soup on top of and it dissolves. So, fun things like that. I like to just have whimsy.

At age 27, Elliot became the youngest four-star chef to be named in any major U.S. city and was named one of Food & Wine magazine’s “Best New Chefs” in 2004. In May of 2008, Elliot opened his eponymous restaurant, Graham Elliot, which went on to become one of only 15 restaurants in the U.S. to be awarded two Michelin stars.

After his homophobic outburst, he appeared at an event organized by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. He has also donated millions of dollars to charity, gone to Alcoholics Anonymous, and apologized on chat shows to everyone from Diane Sawyer to Stephen Colbert.

Lucretia Mott 1793

She was deeply impressed by minister Elias Hicks and embraced his ideas that it was wrong to voluntarily participate in slavery and to partake of goods produced by unpaid labour.

A recent investigative report by The Guardian found a massive slavery problem in the global prawn (or shrimp) industry. To make a long story short, they found problems with a major prawn farmer based in Thailand known as CP Foods. CP Foods supplies prawns to several huge companies all over the world, including our old friend Walmart.

*Research the products that you use. Are any of them made by slave or sweatshop labor? Are any of them tested on animals? Use Lucretia Mott’s example to not spend money on these products. Find out where your shrimp comes from.

When Calvin Coolidge became Vice President in 1920, the prim and New England-ish, couple absolutely enchanted Washington. They were the most popular diners-out in town; everybody wanted them as their guests of honor. Washingtonians were delighted with his acerbic sense of humor, all the funnier since it was so unexpected. And they adored the personable Grace Coolidge who could talk about baseball as well as any man in the room. The Coolidges were happy to accept the invitations. “Gotta eat somewhere,”

*You also “Gotta eat something” why not try these Grace Coolidge Icebox Cookies

Karina Smirnoff 1978

  • Never do the same workout twice. Mix it up so your body doesn’t plateau.
  • Look for workouts where your heart rate changes.
  • Target the areas in your body that you are most conscious about.
  • Eat watermelon and asparagus as diuretics. They are great for the body because they help get toxins out.
  • Eat spinach because it’s a great source of fiber and keeps you full.
  • Reduce salt. Karina has trained herself to not eat salt.
  • Listen to your body. Your body will tell you what you can and cannot eat.

*Lots of good advice from Dancing with the Stars’ Karina Smirnoff.  It’s the top one that is fitting for 365DOLF.  “Never” is a strong word for the entire year, but try and avoid constantly doing the same workout.  This is also a good example of daily advice for both working out and eating right.

Therese of Lisieux 1873

For me, prayer is an upward leap of the heart, an untroubled glance towards heaven, a cry of gratitude and love which I utter from the depths of sorrow as well as from the heights of joy. It has a supernatural grandeur which expands the soul and unites it with God. I say an Our Father or a Hail Mary when I feel so spiritually barren that I cannot summon up a single worthwhile thought. These two prayers fill me with rapture and feed and satisfy my soul.

*Find a prayer that feeds and satisfies your soul, especially when you cannot summon a single positive thought.

My Daily Prayer will be:

Short Prayer for Growing Faith

Dear Lord, help me – every single morning – to find faith in the midst of the chaos. Give me the desire and ability to see You, hear You, talk to You, and give thanks to You.

Show Me the Money: Tips On Saving

The Five Dollar Challenge: Anytime you come across a $5 bill, put it away in an envelope, jar, piggy bank, whatever. At the end of the year, use that money towards a fun big purchase, or put it towards your savings account.

*You actually don’t have to wait the entire year.  Tom Cruise’s birthday is July 3 (literally almost born on the 4th of July), watch Jerry Maguire on that day and when Cuba Gooding Jr. says his famous line, brake open that piggy bank and count all of those $5 bills, while saying “show me the money!”

Nathanial Bacon 1647

Turn the clock back to 1676, exactly 100 years before the American Revolution. A dashing, well-heeled young Englishman, Nathaniel Bacon, recently arrived from England — leads a rebellion against Virginia’s established order. The colony’s government is led by Bacon’s cousin-by-marriage — 70-year-old Gov. William Berkeley, who has held the post for 40 years. Within months “Bacon’s Rebellion” is quelled, Bacon is dead. His co-conspirators are swinging from the gibbet, a commission of enquiry arrives from England with instructions to find out “the truth” and Berkeley is recalled to London where he dies only months later.

In honor of Nathanial Bacon’s birthday, make some bacon butter to use (sparingly) until it’s all gone.

Bacon Butter: Cook 2 slices bacon in a skillet; drain and chop. Blend 1 stick softened butter with the drippings and 2 tablespoons maple syrup. Stir in the chopped bacon.

CROSSOVER: *As far as meals are concerned, take some more advice from Katrina Smirnoff and work some watermelon, asparagus, and spinach into your diet, all while trying to reduce salt (not easy with a fresh batch of bacon butter).  Also in her honor, have a Smirnoff on ice to wind down for the day.

*Today I start reading The Catcher in the Rye. I probably should have read this book by now, but now I will make it the first of what will be 12 books that I read this year.

You’d think that the Facebook / Twitter / reality TV generation would be more receptive to the ramblings of a confused 17-year-old, but many of today’s readers seem less impressed with The Catcher in the Rye than ever. Is Holden getting harder to relate to? Have our attention spans been ruined by incessant texting and? Are we so caught up in telling our own stories nowadays that we’ve forgotten how to listen to anyone else’s?

Click to access filedownload.ashx

*Find a copy or download The Catcher in the Rye.  If you’ve already read it (probably as a teenager), read it again and see if your perspective has changed. This is the first suggested book, with lots more to go.

Paul Revere 1735

Image result for paul revere's ride

Paul Revere’s ride took him from Boston to Lexington. He first crossed the Charles River, and then passed through the cities of Somerville, Medford and Arlington. If his ride started at the Old North Church in Boston (where the famous lanterns were hung), then the approximate distance from Boston to Lexington by this route is 10.9 miles.

However, once Revere arrived in Lexington, he met up with the other midnight rider, William Dawes, and they headed toward Concord, where the Sons of the Liberty had a large cache of weapons. They only made it to Lincoln (about 5.4 miles from Lexington) before being surprised by a British patrol. Dawes escaped, but Revere was escorted at gunpoint back to Lexington. When they arrived back (a round trip of 10.8 miles), Revere’s horse was confiscated. So, assuming the end of this particular trip was Lexington, Revere road approximately 21.7 miles that night.

*Depending on your fitness level (and your condition on New Year’s Day), chose any means to complete one leg of Paul Revere’s famous ride. I am going to take a stationary bike ride of 5.4 miles to start the New Year? And yes, I will be yelling, “The British are coming!”

John Smith 1580 and Pocahontas 1595

Image result for john smith and pocahontas

In Disney’s version of the Pocahontas story, as in countless other iterations, John Smith appears as a dashing romantic hero, smitten by an Indian “princess.” Their relationship symbolizes the bridging of two cultures and, more particularly, shows how Indians could enlighten Europeans to the wisdom of the natural world. It’s a fantasy that obscures an ugly truth: The relationship between Smith and Pocahontas, and more broadly between the Jamestown colonists and Pocahontas’s people, was one of betrayal and dashed hopes.

*Yes they share a birthday, but their people could not overcome their differences.  Use this year to recognize the differences in the people around you and embrace what makes them different from you.

Betsy Ross 1752

Being a widowed upholsterer wasn’t easy. She was struggling to make ends meet as the war continued on, so she looked to make money in any way possible. Ross contracted with the Continental Army eventually to repair uniforms and tents. When she needed some extra spare cash, it is said that she even stuffed musket balls. It was enough to help her business survive throughout her professional life.

*HER BUSINESS are the key words. Yes she worked hard for others, but it was to keep her upholstery business alive.  By the end of this year, hopefully you will realize how important it is to strive for your own business – not to make someone else rich.

Verne Troyer 1969 – watch Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002)

Image result for mini me

There is an ongoing debate about the whole idea of “mini-me”: the idea that performers with dwarfism are just being demeaningly represented as comic or horrific miniatures. But Troyer at any rate tackled and subverted that idea — with confidence, with comic gusto and with charm.

*The last and best of the Austin Powers trilogy.  Maybe start a New Year’s Day tradition of watching all three.  Use Verne Troyer’s character “Mini Me” as inspiration to start the New Year.

Morris Chestnut 1969 – wine-braised pork and chestnuts with sauerkraut

Image result for morris chestnut

Morris Chestnut, who plays the smoldering, crime-solving pathologist Dr. Beaumont Rosewood, puts his washboard abs on full display in the promo, dripping sweat as he takes a shirtless jog in the Miami heat. And the Internet responded with gratitude.

If Chestnut had it his way, scenes like that wouldn’t happen all the time. “I actually had to talk to the writers because it was like every episode I was taking my shirt off,” says the actor, 46, with a laugh. “I was like, ‘If you do it every episode, it doesn’t have the impact.’ And I want to eat some doughnuts every now and again!”

“When I do get time, I’m either with family or devoted to watching my sports teams,” he says. “I used to wake up Sunday morning, go to the gym and then from 10 a.m. to 9 at night, I’d sit in front of the TV watching football.”

*January 1, 2019 is a Tuesday, but wake up and go to the gym for the Paul Revere workout. Then from 10am to 9 at night, watch college football bowl games. Take a break at some point to make this wine-braised pork and chestnuts recipe (add sauerkraut). Eat some doughnuts for dessert.

It has always been a tradition in my family to eat pork and sauerkraut on New Year’s Day – for good luck all year. You’ll need to add your own sauerkraut.

SIDE NOTE – I too am 46 and do NOT have washboard abs… hopefully by 1/1/2020, I will.

During the battle of Gettysburg, although still new to the command of his army, and suffering great losses of such leaders as John Reynolds, Meade was able to both hold off Lee’s attacks and finally smash the Confederate army on the third day.  After the battle, Lee was able to retreat back into Virginia, and Meade received harsh criticism from President Abraham Lincoln for not finishing off the Army of Northern Virginia in its weakened state.

I thought to myself, ‘It was all worth it.’ It was also in that moment that I knew my goal of making it on the 2016 Rio Olympics team was possible.”

Soon after, Sparks—a former 800-meter standout at Notre Dame—signed on as a volunteer assistant coach for the high school team and the club, most of whose runners come from low-income and at-risk families.

*With all of the money that you’ve saved this year, how much could you give back to kids from low-income and at-risk families? If not money, how about time?

CROSSOVER: *If you are a hopeless romantic, you can turn the last day of the year into a Nicholas Sparks movie marathon.

How to Use 365DOLF

For the best results, make sure you have the 365DOLF workbook (starting in 2020) to go along with each famous suggestion, each day.

Use all 6 birthdays to expand your mind each day by learning about each individual with general or unique information about them. All of the birthdays serve as conversation starters throughout the day.  However, the MIND birthday focuses more on improving your life by expanding your mind. This is where having journal can be most useful.

Use the BODY birthday for a specific workout each day. This keeps you from getting in a rut at the gym, or not knowing what to do. If there is not a suggested workout, there will be advice offered on health and nutrition. Use the days with no workouts as rest days or perform a workout that you’ve liked from the past. It is best to have a gym membership, and in a perfect world – a personal trainer.

Use the SOUL birthday to become more spiritual and enlightened. Some of the advice may not coincide with your set religion, but look at it as a way to expand your mind and your soul towards becoming the best person you can be. Some days you can just sit back and listen to soul music. You will also have several opportunities to donate to charities. Pick the ones that speak to your soul and contribute money or time and energy.

The MONEY birthday can be used in a variety of ways. Depending on that day’s birthday, you will get advice on saving, investing, and personal finances. Some of the MONEY birthdays however, will focus on starting and running your own business. Hopefully by 2021 you will feel like I do, and no longer want to make money for someone else.

Use the ENTERTAINMENT birthday for what it is – a daily escape from reality. Using the internet, find free music to listen to throughout your day, and especially when making dinner. Using services like Netflix, watch the suggested movie or TV show as a nightcap on your day. Other forms of entertainment include reading, board games, video games, and chess. As with all birthdays, don’t be afraid to adapt as you see fit.

Finally, use the FOOD birthday has a suggestion for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a snack. Most birthdays come with a suggested recipe but sometimes a restaurant is suggested. There are even some days that map out all of your meals for that day. The good thing about famous people is that they usually eat pretty well, so most of the recipes are heart (and waistline) healthy. But don’t worry, there are some epic cheat days. Some days even have a bonus cocktail to wash it all down. If your goal this year is to lose weight, eat accordingly – but gone are the days of not being able to answer, “What’s for dinner?”

A side goal is to have 6 new daily habits by the end of the year. By 12/31, you may be doing the following on a daily basis…

MIND – meditating every day

BODY – doing squats as you brush your teeth every day

SOUL – saying your daily prayer that you have memorized

MONEY – spending time each day on your business plans – not just someone else’s

ENTERTAINMENT – escape from reality every day

FOOD – eating 5 small meals a day

Built into 365DOLF are things that should be done that we sometimes forget about or put off for another year. Things like going to the dentist at 2:30 (tooth hurty) on 2/13 (tooth hurtin). Getting a heart checkup, cholesterol levels checked, and cancer screenings – to name a few.

There are also built in reminders to call your mom, play catch with your kids, chase your dog around, and dance with your partner.

Whatever you do, don’t take any of this too seriously. Have fun and get out of this book what YOU need to Live Famously.
