Winston Churchill 1874

For a man who had teetered on the brink of bankruptcy in the 1930s, in debt to the tune of as much as $3.75 million in today’s money, a place in the cabinet also bought him precious time with his creditors. Eventually the government would even pick up a portion of his liquor bill.

Supreme Confidence

Churchill thought very highly of himself. He believed he was destined for greatness. This belief guided his every action and decision in life. I’m not suggesting that everyone should believe they will lead their country to greatness. What can be taken from this is that you really need to have confidence in yourself and your abilities before anything else. You are the source of all your success, and if you don’t believe that you can achieve great things, then you won’t.

*Have confidence in yourself and your abilities. You are the source of your success. Believe that you can achieve great things. Just don’t blow money like Winston Churchill. Or, you could have the utmost confidence that the money will return to you one day.

Kaley Cuoco 1985

There’s one glaring difference between Kaley Cuoco and her “Big Bang Theory” counterpart: the desire to have children. Cuoco, who is married to Karl Cook, says she wants to have children someday.

“I tried spinning, I tried running, I tried yoga, I tried Pilates,” she tells in an exclusive behind-the-scenes interview at her cover shoot for our December issue. “I realized I don’t like running…I refuse to do it. I like spinning, so I try to mix that in. When I found hot yoga, I fell in love with it and was like, this is my thing.”

On Nov. 30, 1835, the small town of Florida, Mo. witnessed the birth of its most famous son. Samuel Langhorne Clemens was welcomed into the world as the sixth child of John Marshall and Jane Lampton Clemens. Little did John and Jane know, their son Samuel would one day be known as Mark Twain – America’s most famous literary icon.

I never have felt comfortable having a foundation named after me. Originally I asked if we could call it the LeBron James Foundation, or the Brad Pitt Foundation, since I thought that would get a lot more people to donate money. I was told I could get sued if I did that. So I went with the Stiller Foundation, since the point is to try to get as much or as little attention for this cause as my name could muster.

The Stiller Foundation is working to build more schools, to give more children the chance to realize their potential. You can help by visiting the Support section of the website. Get involved, donate, check out our “gear”. It will all go to funding our programs and supporting the children of Haiti.

Let Yourself Go A Little

One of the most important lessons we can learn from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is to just let go of our natural instincts and emotions, to do things that we wouldn’t normally think of doing.

Try to let go of yourself every now and again, and don’t over-think certain situations.

*Let yourself go and watch The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Bo Jackson, the world’s greatest living athlete, and the only man to be an All-Star in baseball and a Pro Bowler in football, now has a confession to make.

If Bo knew back in his playing days what he knows now:

Bo never would have won a Heisman Trophy at Auburn. Bo never would have been inducted into the college football Hall of Fame. Bo never would have worn a Los Angeles Raiders uniform. Bo never would have trampled Brian Bosworth on Monday Night Football. And Bo never would have suffered the dislocated left hip that ended his football career.

He believes in things with a zealot’s certainty — God, corporations, his talent, Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” etc. The interception he threw a yard short of his second Super Bowl championship? Before he got to the sideline, God told him that it was part of His plan. The public announcement that he was practicing abstinence with slinky pop singer Ciara? Russell Wilson was put here to guide her to a better place.

Wilson lifts weights four days per week. His sessions are split up into two speed days and two strength days. The speed days focus on variants of Olympic weightlifting exercises that develop power—this aids Wilson in running, cutting, and scrambling in the pocket.

Don Cheadle 1964 – watch Hotel Rwanda

“I don’t have an entourage, I don’t have bodyguards, I don’t have security. I don’t have any of that shit. If I’m at the store, I’m at the store. It’s just me. If I go to play poker in Commerce [a small town south of Los Angeles] or something, it’s just me. That’s disarming to people, too, in a way. First of all, they’re like, ‘Eh? Bullshit. That’s not him, because he wouldn’t be here sitting at a table by himself.’ And then, once they realise who I am, they’re like, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ Then, after a while, it’s like, ‘Oh, you’re just a dude sitting here playing cards like I am.’ I would feel weirder doing the other thing.”

In “The Screwtape Letters,” C.S. Lewis said, “In peace we can make many ignore good and evil entirely; in danger, the issue is forced upon them in a guise to which even we cannot blind them. There is here a cruel dilemma before us. If we promoted justice and charity among men, we should be playing directly into the Enemy’s hands; but if we guide them to the opposite behaviour, this sooner or later produces (for He permits it to produce) a war or a revolution, and the undisguisable issue of cowardice or courage awakes thousands of men from moral stupor.”

Paul Rusesabagina (Don Cheadle) is a man who has been cruelly awakened.  Like most people, he has trouble fathoming just how cruel man can be, but he discovers this when the president of Rwanda is assassinated, and marauding soldiers take to the streets at the maniacal urgings of Hutu Power Radio.  Soon, the machete-wielding soldiers are killing every Tutsi in sight.

Chadwick Boseman 1977 – Wakandan Jeweled Vegetable Pilau with Berbere Braised Lamb

Chadwick Boseman is no stranger to playing real-life superheroes. From funk icon James Brown to baseball legend Jackie Robinson, the talented actor isn’t afraid to honor prominent figures by taking on their very being.

Boseman does just that in new film Marshall, but almost turned down the opportunity for fear of being locked in a biopic box, according to Essence.

‘Wakanda is colourful, it’s teaming with life, teaming with potential. Wakanda is a dream. Black Panther has turned the world’s eye to Africa in a positive way. ‘In the past we haven’t seen proper representation of African cuisine in the mainstream media, and this is one of the ways why food is so important… it’s a representation of a people.’

From early childhood, Blake spoke of having visions—at four he saw God “put his head to the window”; around age nine, while walking through the countryside, he saw a tree filled with angels. In one of the most buzzed about segments of the past few years (at least in journalism circles), Stewart took financial network CNBC to task for often giving bad on-air advice and for giving a free pass to Wall Street during the height of the financial crisis. “If I had only followed CNBC’s advice, I’d have a million dollars today,” Stewart said, “provided I started with a hundred million dollars.”

This came in response to the infamous—and highly entertaining—rant by CNBC personality Rick Santelli, who called foreclosed homeowners “losers” in a segment and chastised them for not exhibiting what he deemed an appropriate level of personal responsibility.

Ed Harris 1950 – watch Pollock

Image result for ed harris pollock

  1. ‘Pollock’ (2000)
For Harris, “Pollock” represents the culmination of a 10 year labor of love. After reading a biography about American abstract painter Jackson Pollock, the actor decided to both play the lead and make the film his directorial debut. His passion for the project is evident in every frame, particularly in his towering performance as the tortured, brilliant artist. Though he made a name for himself in the Postwar New York art scene, Pollock was unable to conquer his alcoholism, and his life ended in a drunk driving accident. Yet “Pollock” is not a grim portrait of addiction, but instead a lively tribute to a creative and complicated individual. A great deal of the film, in fact, is dedicated to Pollock’s painting, all of which Harris did himself. Marcia Gay Hardenwon an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for playing Lee Krasner, Pollock’s long-suffering wife. Harris contended as Best Actor, but lost to Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”).

In August of 1949, Life Magazine ran a banner headline that begged the question: “Jackson Pollock: Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?”

As DJ Khaled often says, “it’s a cold world out there. Sure, everyone has a plan set for them and often we are not sure what it is. By working hard, enjoying life and doing your best all of the time, there is no doubt that you will find success. The amount you get out of anything is determined by the amount you put in. Hard work and pursuit of the path for your life will unlock many doors for you.

I mostly focus on my thighs and my bum, so I do a lot of squats and weight lifting. And I do one circuit of cardio. What I’ve learned is that you can take your time with training. You don’t have to beat yourself up as long as you get in the workouts that you need. I used to push myself until I felt sick. But I’m approaching it differently now. I enjoy working out. And I like the aftermath—that feeling of contentment.”

Rich Little 1938

Rich notes that in his heyday, he could fill the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and earn up to $50,000 per week.  Much of that he put into real estate in the 1970s.  “I invested in a lot of buildings, condos and stuff like that,” he said. “And that was great for a while but then everything started getting older, which meant earthquake, fire and all kinds of other insurance, so I sold off my portion and put most of my money into government bonds.”

“It was a great move for me and has left me in pretty good shape… living off interest and dividends and not touching the principal.”

Most government bonds are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, meaning that default is extremely unlikely and would really only occur if the U.S. government could not print additional money to pay off its debt. For this reason, T-Notes, for example, are generally considered risk-free investments and benchmarks against which other investments are compared.

I couldn’t believe what I said either!”

Hours later, his last Sunday strip came out with a farewell: “Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy … How can I ever forget them.” By then, Peanuts was carried by more than 2,600 newspapers in 75 countries and read by some 300 million people. Zachary Taylor 1784

Zachary Taylor’s sudden death shocked the nation. After attending Fourth of July orations for most of the day, Taylor walked along the Potomac River before returning to the White House. Hot and tired, he drank iced water and consumed large quantities of cherries and other fruits. The President suffered severe stomach pains for the next five days. Diagnosed as suffering from “cholera morbus” by his physicians, Taylor ate slivers of ice for relief until his body began rejecting fluids. At about ten in the morning on July 9, 1850, Taylor called his wife to him and asked her not to weep, saying: “I have always done my duty, I am ready to die. My only regret is for the friends I leave behind me.”

So Ol’ Rough and Ready was re-interred to rest in peace with the knowledge that, whatever we conclude about life, death is like a bowl of cherries.

What is the best exercise for increasing jumping ability? —

Leg presses are one answer. Or any form of exercise that makes your legs push more than your body weight. I would not have younger players lift free weights because their joints and connective tissue are not yet fully formed. One of the best ways to develop jumping ability is simply to jump a lot. Vertical leap is important, but not as important in rebounding or shooting as timing and the quickness necessary to get good position or get open for shots.

There is no question as to Joplin’s greatness, his talent, his importance in the history of ragtime and American music overall.

“Bride of Chucky” was the better received, both critically and commercially. Playing opposite Brad Dourif as the infamous plastic doll Chucky and his girlfriend Tiffany played by Jennifer Tilly, Heigl’s teenage newlywed character soon becomes an unwitting accomplice to the evil duo’s plans to regain human form.

*Listen to Scott Joplin while making Katherine Heigl’s brie tomato pasta. Enjoy eating it while watching her in Knocked Up – just don’t have a mouth full during the delivery scene.

Franklin Pierce 1804

Image result for franklin pierce

Franklin Pierce loved a stiff drink and was known for his marathon carousing sessions. But the one that occurred on Friday, October 23, 1857, takes the cake. Pierce’s friend Clement March recounts in his diary: “[The general] and I dined at the Tremont at one o’clock, a glass of brandy and water before, a pint of champagne at dinner, went to the Fair Grounds and returned to the Tremont at 5, drank brandy and water till 71⁄2, supped at Parker’s on broiled oysters, beefsteak, and Pomy’s Claret, went to the Theatre, and saw Fanny Kemble and her daughter in a private box by mistake, returned to Parker’s and drank some very old brandy in his private room, went back to the Theatre and took possession of our ‘proscenium box,’ then again to Parker’s and had raw oysters and a bottle of Stein Wine, then to the General’s room, drank two pint bottles of champagne, took a stroll about the streets, and made a call in Fruit Street, where we disbursed some thirty dollars, and at 4 o’clock repaired.”

‘The Brook Bum Buster is killer but really does the trick and the Beverly Hills Power Walk is basically walking really fast on an uphill gradient on the treadmill – which is brilliant for your thighs and bum! It reminds me of when I lived in LA and I used to see everyone powerwalking around in their sun visors, which is why its our Beverly Hills Power Walk!’

Robin Roberts 1960

Robin’s path to realizing her dreams was not without its hardships. Twice she faced life-threatening illnesses. She credits the love and support from her family, friends, colleagues and viewers for helping her overcome breast cancer, and a rare and often fatal blood disease called myelodysplastic syndrome, referred to as MDS. Through it all, she honored her friends and supporters by choosing to make “her mess her message,” something her mother said often. She opened her heart and soul, lifted the veil, and shared her struggle with the world on Good Morning America, and on a prime-time 20/20 special entitled Robin’s Journey, hoping to inspire and encourage those in need.

When fear knocks, let faith answer the door. Have faith that if you’re diagnosed with cancer or if someone you love is diagnosed, there are oncology nurses, doctors, clergy and a battalion of other people who will be there and want to help you get through it.

*Don’t be afraid to make your mess your message. When fear knocks, let faith answer the door. Beautifully said by Robin Roberts.

The 30-year-old, who is now married with two children — Giovanna, 3, and Lorenzo, 5 — doesn’t have to worry as much about finances, with an estimated net worth of about $4 million, according to International Business Times. She’s also likely making a substantial sum of money for her role in the reboot “Jersey Shore Family Vacation.”

But that doesn’t mean Polizzi plans to quit her day job anytime soon, which includes running her very own clothing line called “Snooki Love.”

“I never want to stop, because I love what I do. I love reality,” she told the publication. “I love having my own brand and my own business. I like keeping busy. If I’m not doing anything, I feel like I’m wasting my time. I definitely don’t want to stop, ever. I’ll work until I stop breathing.”

*Listen to her as Miley Cyrus, Hannah Montana, or a little bit of both. It’s good for your psyche.

John Schnatter 1961

Image result for john schnatter

It’s understandable that Schnatter would want to be so involved, since rather than buying or inheriting a business, he really did build the company from modest origins. When Schnatter was just out of college, his father, Robert Schnatter, invested in a failing bar, Mick’s Lounge, and Schnatter fils, who’d worked in pizza joints throughout high school and college, set up some used kitchen equipment in a converted broom closet and within months had his own booming pizza business, which eventually grew into a multibillion-dollar company.

*Order Papa John’s pizza for dinner tonight. Solidify your multi-billion-dollar company while eating it.

“Wrecking Ball”

To capture the edgy vibe of Miley Cyrus’s ode to heartbreak, we headed to super hip hotspot the Press Lounge. Their savvy bartenders were able to capture the complexity of a relationship in this pretty cocktail: it’s cantaloupe sweetness is cut with the smoky bite of Mezcal and a spicy sprinkle of pepper flakes.

Wiley Post 1898

His plans were nearly derailed when he lost an eye in a work-related accident.  As a result, Post had trouble with depth-perception, but ultimately he trained himself to gauge distances accurately with one eye.  He took the accident compensation, about $1800, and bought his first airplane. In it he gave flying lessons, flew oilmen to their rigs, and barnstormed on the weekends.

Billie Jean King 1943

Know your own “why.”
Billie Jean King was the best of the best among tennis players, but she defined tennis as “not my primary.  It was my secondary.  It was my platform to try to help equality.”  It does not get any clearer than this.  Her “job” was to advance equality.  Tennis was just the way to go about her job.

German philosopher Frederick Nietzsche once said, ‘He who has a why can endure any how.’ Knowing your why is an important first step in figuring out how to achieve the goals that excite you and create a life you enjoy living (versus merely surviving!). Indeed, only when you know your ‘why’ will you find the courage to take the risks needed to get ahead, stay motivated when the chips are down, and move your life onto an entirely new, more challenging, and more rewarding trajectory.

*What is your “why”? Is your job your primary or a way to make money to advance your “why”?

“I asked the club owner not to put my name in the paper, to make up another name. When he came up with Rodney Dangerfield I thought he was crazy, but I was depressed enough to go along with it. I figured, if you’re gonna change your name you might as well change it.”

So, no matter how much fame, money, drugs, and women the guy had, he was — on some deep level — unhappy.

*This is why 365DOLF doesn’t just talk about money. Only when you have sharpened your mind, body, and soul will you find true happiness. Watch Rodney Dangerfield in Easy Money for motivation.

Scarlett Johansson 1984 – watch Lost in Translation

Image result for scarlett johansson

Woody Allen has gone on record about Johansson’s abilities as an actress: how she is “sexually overwhelming”; how she has a “zaftig humidity”; and how he believed that she has the “acting ability to be not just a passing pinup girl but a genuinely meaningful actress”. And Johansson has responded in kind by saying that she would be prepared to “sew the hems of his pants if he asked me to”.

Johansson had appeared in over a dozen film and TV roles by the time that Lost in Translation premiered in theatres. This was the movie that really changed her career forever. Scarlett herself explains that no one knew it would become as profound or as great as it ended up being. She was just 17 when the movie was being made and she admits that she was thrilled to be working with a comedian of Murray, but also that there were some challenges to working with a co-star as famous as that.

*Enjoy his eggplant parmigiana while watching Ruffalo as Bruce Banner and fellow 11/22 birthday Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow in The Avengers. Wash it down with a Markarita

Before skyrocketing to fame, actor Mark Ruffalo paid the bills as many Hollywood hopefuls do: working behind a bar. In his hospitality industry days, he had a signature cocktail—what he calls “the most important part of being a bartender”—and it was aptly named The Markarita.

Voltaire 1694

Instead of simply focusing on the end result, start with the action. Planning out a meal today works better than aspiring to be a specific weight. Practicing an instrument will get you farther than imagining yourself in front of large audiences. Selling goods out of a renovated gas station beats picturing your idea blossoming into a global enterprise.

Starting small is a simple, but effective method.

His surgical wit and provocative ideas on religion, liberty and ethics saw him both celebrated and scorned in the courts of Europe, and later helped cement his reputation as one of the foundational figures of the Enlightenment.

*This is what 365DOLF is all about. Planning out each day to start with action and not focusing on the end result. Start simple every day of the year and hopefully by the end you will have the mindset and skills to be at your ideal weight, and maybe have your global enterprise.

Stan Musial 1920

Image result for stan musial

Stan Musial passed away on January 19, 2013 at 92 years of age.  His wife of nearly 72 years died the previous year.  Thousands of friends filed through the Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis during the six-hour public visitation.  The funeral Mass for the man who played 22 years in a Cardinal uniform was presided over by a Cardinal of a different sort, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, along with St. Louis Archbishop Robert Carlson and Bishop Stika.  Hundreds filled the Basilica for the two-hour funeral Mass, while many stood outside.  All came to honor an exceptional human being and to pray for the repose of his soul.

The best that a Catholic can wish for a loved one who has died is that the person’s soul will go to heaven. Heaven is the place of eternal rest – or repose – that is the final reward of faithful followers of Jesus. This is what “repose of the soul” means in a Catholic context: that the soul has gone to heaven to be with God for all eternity. Catholics pray that their deceased loved ones will experience such repose.

*You want to be honored as an exceptional human being and experience the final reward as a faithful follower. You’re living your life so that your soul can go to heaven to be with God for eternity.

Once, George Zimmer had a startup called Men’s Wearhouse. He made it famous, and vice versa. Then he got pushed out and founded two more companies. But he still wants the old one back.

Why he won’t retire: “I don’t think it’s healthy to retire.” He said it’s good to “work less,” but don’t retire.

Harold Ramis 1944 – watch Stripes

“Harold was clearly the most successful comedy writer-director of all time,” said Tim Kazurinsky, who followed Ramis at Second City and later became his friend. “The number of films that he has made that were successful, that were blockbusters, nobody comes close. Even in light in of that, he was more successful as a human being.”

With the knowledge that the studio didn’t want him, and more comfortable with writing at that point than with acting, Ramis was reluctant to play Russell. He even had Dennis Quaid (P.J. Soles’s husband at the time) read for his part. Bill Murray stepped in and insisted that he only wanted to work with Ramis.
