Robert Redford 1936

Redford was guided as much by frustration as compassion. “I was never a good student,” he says. “I had to be dragged into kindergarten. It was hard to sit and listen to somebody talk. I wanted to be out, educated by experience and adventure, and I didn’t know how to express that.”

*Educate yourself by experience and adventure today. Think of watching Ordinary People – the Oscar winning movie, directed by Redford – especially if you’re dealing with loss.

Bob Harper 1965

During sudden cardiac arrest — which is caused when the heart’s electrical system suddenly malfunctions — the heart stops beating and blood is no longer pumping through the body or the brain. Death can occur within minutes. Harper probably survived the event because of his excellent physical fitness and the immediate medical attention.

However, the fact that he was in such terrific shape also made having a heart attack at 51 that much more stunning.

He takes time each day to focus on inner calmness.

A three-time New York Times bestselling author, Harper regularly practices transcendental meditation (TM), which involves silently repeating a mantra in order to place your body in a state of profound rest and allow your mind to achieve a sense of peace, as defined by the Mayo Clinic. “TM, yoga, and my dogs really help me with managing my stress,” he emphasizes. “I tell people you have to find whatever it is in your life that you can do to turn off the white noise, just for a few minutes. If it means sitting with your phone off for five or ten minutes and not having to focus on anyone or anything— those things are so good for you. It helps your brain, it helps your body.”

*If you haven’t yet, get a heart checkup today. Would you survive cardiac arrest? Help your brain and body by shutting off the white noise for a few minutes today. Try TM and spending time with your dogs – and shut off that phone for 5 minutes today.

On the evening of Dec. 31, Clemente boarded a plane filled with relief supplies, but the overloaded plane would never reach its final destination. It plunged into the ocean off the shores of Puerto Rico.

Although millions were grief-stricken upon hearing the heartbreaking news, Clemente’s family and intimate friends – even total strangers who Clemente befriended in his lifetime – weren’t shocked by his actions. On the contrary, it’s a side they already knew existed.

The downside of the success of Dirty Dancing was that Swayze had found himself typecast. That changed after Ghost, but director Jerry Zucker told PEOPLE that his roles in films such as Roadhouse made him reluctant to even consider Swayze as the male lead. However, Swayze’s reading of the film’s farewell scene changed Zucker’s mind. “We all had tears in our eyes, right there in the office – and we knew how it ends,” Zucker said. “I saw a side of Patrick that I never knew existed.”

A competitive spirit is the greatest motivator

Ask Ellison why he still comes to work every day — what drives him after all he’s achieved — and he’ll tell you the same answer: he loves to compete.

“I’m addicted to winning. The more you win, the more you want to win,” he says.

More recently he described his motivation like this:

“What drives me is this constant testing of limits. Constant learning. … How can you move the world just a bit, make a difference, change lives … and how much can I help [while] discovering my own limits?”

*Test your limits. How can you move the world today? – just a bit.

Wilhelm Wundt 1832

Wundt argued that conscious mental states could be scientifically studied using introspection. Wundt’s introspection was not a causal affair, but a highly practiced form of self-examination. He trained psychology students to make observations that were biased by personal interpretation or previous experience, and used the results to develop a theory of conscious thought.

While you vacuum the house or wash the dishes, pay attention to how you feel. Do you feel tired, unenthused, uninspired, or apathetic? Put all your awareness into the act of doing the chores, and you will find that completing your daily tasks can actually be fun. Or, you might still hate doing chores, but either way, you can become aware of your thoughts during this time when most people let their brains run on autopilot.

If you give life to your chores and inject meaning into your daily tasks, you will feel more present in life rather than just being a silent spectator.

*Whatever you do around the house today, put all of your awareness into it. Don’t run on autopilot.

Madonna follows a very strict macrobiotic diet that abolishes the consumption of wheat, eggs, meats, and dairy, and extolls the benefits of something called “sea vegetables.” You were expecting this woman to mess around? She does not mess around.

Lesson 1: Aim High

Do not be satisfied with “just enough”, when you can have the “most”. Do not settle for “just all right”, when you can be the “best”.

Aim high. Be greedy. Of course, it goes without saying that the effort you put in should also be at its fullest. There should be no room for half-assed attempts or half-hearted cracks at something. If you won’t aim high, that has very little difference to not aiming for anything at all.

*Not aiming high has very little difference than not aiming for anything. Remember this today. Good is the enemy of great.

The success of entrepreneurs and philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates has taught John Jacobs, the co-founder of apparel company Life is Good, one crucial lesson: Entrepreneurs don’t have to choose between making money and doing good.

Jacobs called the couple “unbelievably inspiring” and discussed one idea from Melinda Gates that particularly influences his thinking: “When you come to a point in your life when you see difficult things, don’t look in the other direction; move toward it,” Jacobs said, citing Melinda. “That’s the moment when you can affect change.”

“If you’re just trying to make a buck or sell a few products, you might just bail when you hit those harder points,” he added.

“In the course of your lives, without any plan on your part, you’ll come to see suffering that will break your heart. When it happens, and it will, don’t turn away from it; turn toward it. That is the moment when change is born.”

I’m on a diet called the Ketogenic diet, and I’m so hooked on it, I love it. I’ve been on it for a little over five years, and I’ve tried to get my entire family on it. I love steak, salmon, chicken, cauliflower pizza is great, and I love making a breakfast casserole.

Tebow sticks to a ketogenic diet, which means eating a lot of healthy fats, moderate protein, very few carbs and hardly any sugar.

“A lot of people would think that’s very boring, and sometimes it is, but you find ways to really spice it up,” he says. “I eat a lot of things that run, swim or fly; I eat a lot of greens, a lot of Greek yogurt, a lot of avocado.”

More specifically, though, here’s what his typical food day looks like:

  • Breakfast:  “I have eggs in some form, whether it’s an omelette with spinach and ham and bacon and sausage all in there, or a scramble with avocado.”
  • Lunch and Dinner: Sparkling water—specifically La Croix, if he can get his hands on a can—and plain Greek yogurt are must-haves throughout the day. Beyond that, Tebow sticks to lean meats, like chicken, steak and salmon, often pairing them with asparagus, spinach or avocado. And guacamole: “Love it.”

*Eat breakfast and lunch like Tim Tebow today. This could become a habit.

What you might not know about the actress is that she is a great cook. Kunis revealed she loves cooking traditional Russian food and even loves picking up fresh ingredients at the grocery store.

“I’m best at Russian food, because that’s what I saw my mother cooking growing up. I was born in the Ukraine, although my family moved to Los Angeles when I was seven.”

Top Russian foods you have to try

  1. Borsch / Borscht(Originates from the Ukraine but will also be found in Russia)

This beet and cabbage red soup is a delicious belly warmer on Moscow’s colder days, served with or without meat, potato, herbs (usually dill) and a dollop of smetana, Russian sour cream.

*Be like Mila Kunis – go to the store and get fresh ingredients to make this Ukrainian/Russian borscht.

“Mila is the kind of girl everybody wants to hang out with,” says Fred Noe. “We love to laugh and cuss and raise hell and enjoy the bourbon. When this thing started, our former CMO, Kevin George, told me he saw an opportunity to introduce women to whiskey, and he was looking for a spokesperson to whom everybody will relate. Partnering with Mila has been a match made in heaven.”

Kunis admits she was only a casual whiskey fan before signing on with Beam. She acquired a taste for it from her rye drinking husband, actor Ashton Kutcher, in the form of a scotch-based Penicillin cocktail. Gradually Kunis came to enjoy bourbon over rocks, and she subscribes to Beam’s theory that the female market is underserved.

To cut costs even more, the filmmaker enlisted his relatively cheaper Alfred Hitchcock Presents TV crew and shot the film on less pricey black and white film. He started his day off right with a breakfast of eggs, pancakes, pork chops, cornbread, fried potatoes, hominy, muffins, and a beefsteak. He washed it all down with a gallon of orange juice or golden nectar, as he called his favorite drink. Occasionally he would entertain himself with a mid-morning snack of a few dozen clams or oysters.

A typical lunch consisted of two lobsters, deviled crabs, clams, oysters and beef. He finished up with an array of pies. Not like slices of different pies, but several pies. This would hold him over till about 4:30, at which time he gobbled up a heaping platter of seafood. He usually took the snack with a few carafes of lemon soda

“The usual” evening meal began with an appetizer of two or three dozen oysters, six crabs, and a few servings of green turtle soup. The main course was two whole ducks, six or seven lobsters, a sirloin steak, two servings of terrapin and a variety of vegetables. He topped it off with a platter of pastries and often a two pound box of candy.
