Thomas Jefferson 1743

  1. Never put off till tomorrow what you can do to-day.
  2. Never trouble another for what you can do yourself.
  3. Never spend your money before you have it.
  4. Never buy what you do not want, because it is cheap; it will be dear to you.
  5. Pride costs us more than hunger, thirst and cold.
  6. We never repent of having eaten too little.
  7. Nothing is troublesome that we do willingly.
  8. How much pain have cost us the evils which have never happened.
  9. Take things always by their smooth handle.
  10. When angry, count ten, before you speak; if very angry, an hundred.

*Pick one of the above Thomas Jefferson practical life lessons to focus on today. For me, I’m going to focus on #1. I’m not going to put anything off until tomorrow. I’m taking care of everything that I can today.

Allison Williams 1988

Through her parents, TV producer and radio host Jane Stoddard Williams and longtime NBC newsman Brian Williams, she was exposed to the world of overexposure and, she hopes, inoculated against its common side effects, such as elephantiasis of the ego and bad manners. As a kid, she met presidents and walked on red carpets.

I do two different things. For cardio I do SoulCycle. I really don’t like to run, plus I have terrible knees and get bored on the elliptical. SoulCycle is basically a dance party on a bicycle, and you burn calories and it’s so fun. Then I also do Core Fusion at Exhale Spa locations. It mixes together Pilates and barre method. It’s really hard and kicks my butt, so those two together work perfectly. On a good week, I’d like to do two of each, but on a realistic week, it’s one or two.

*You just did a SoulCycle workout, so today it’s going to be a Core Fusion workout. Find a class or a workout online.

Madalyn Murray O’Hair 1919

Image result for madalyn murray o'hair

There were pioneers in atheism, and they weren’t all burned at the stake. “The most hated woman in America” was the sobriquet Life magazine bestowed on Madalyn Murray O’Hair, whose suit against the Baltimore Public School System went all the way to the Supreme Court and ended prayer in public schools in 1963.

“An Atheist loves himself and his fellow man instead of a god. An Atheist accepts that heaven is something for which we should work now — here on earth — for all men together to enjoy. An Atheist accepts that he can get no help through prayer, but that he must find in himself the inner conviction and strength to meet life, to grapple with it, to subdue it and to enjoy it. An Atheist accepts that only in a knowledge of himself and a knowledge of his fellow man can he find the understanding that will help lead to a life of fulfillment.”

*A true leap of faith for some may be that the above description of an Atheist sounds pretty good.

Alfred Mosher Butts 1899

Butts died in 1993 and did not become rich from his invention, but he was able to enjoy the worldwide popularity of Scrabble

*Playing Scrabble could be your entertainment for the day but realize that as you’re working on your business, you want to see the benefits of your hard work. So don’t delay – get busy T O D A Y.

Aaron Lewis 1972 – listen to Staind and/or Aaron Lewis

Image result for aaron lewis

Aaron Lewis revels in irony. The singer, who once appeared on the cover of High Times magazine holding a bong, arrives for an interview sporting a narcotics law-enforcement cap. Equally ironic is the fact that the frontman for the hard-rock group Staind just released one of the most country-sounding albums of the year. Titled Sinner.

*Listen to Aaron Lewis as the lead man of Staind if you want rock. Listen to his solo stuff if you want country.

Frank Woolworth 1852 – ham salad sandwich

The Dime Store King

Frank Woolworth was a visionary retailer who pioneered many of the selling techniques still used today. A self-made man, he rose from humble beginnings as a farm boy to become the head of the largest chain of shops in the world.

*Go back in time and make this Woolworth’s lunch counter ham salad sandwich. Make it available for everyone

Greensboro Lunch Counter

Racial segregation was still legal in the United States on February 1, 1960, when four African American college students sat down at this Woolworth counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. Politely asking for service at this “whites only” counter, their request was refused. When asked to leave, they remained in their seats. Their sit-in drew national attention and helped ignite a youth-led movement to challenge inequality throughout the South.

BONUS – “Anyway, I’ve had my doughnut today. I have a doughnut every morning. The same kind, from a street cart. Vanilla frosted with sprinkles on one half, weirdly. How hard is it to sprinkle the whole thing?”  – Allison Williams

*Have your daily doughnut for dessert. Get Out

Henry Clay 1777

Image result for henry clay

The Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship hosts their annual Henry Clay Student Congress. Students from all 50 states travel to Lexington, Kentucky to learn the value of compromise, bipartisanship, and policy making.

Clay’s last public efforts on behalf of the Compromise of 1850 cemented his position as an advocate of national unity above all else. His stirring denunciation of secessionist rhetoric echoes in a melancholy tone when one considers the enormity that tore the nation apart less than a decade after his death, but its power is undeniable.

*All of Congress should have to attend the Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship. Don’t you ever underestimate the value of compromise even if our government officials can’t seem to grasp it. Compromise with someone today.

“The worst advice would be when someone told me to stay in my lane. I, at the time, was modeling and was going to make the very cliché transition into acting, it’s one that a lot of people take, and I think that they had the best intentions in mind.”

*Do the above Brooklyn Decker workout to burn fat. Have you seen her? It works. Don’t stay in your lane today – except when you are driving.

Beverly Cleary 1916

In 2000, to honor her invaluable contributions to children’s literature, Beverly Cleary was named a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress.

All of creation was designed with a need for Sabbath rest. From the beginning of time, God modeled it for himself and ordained it for all creation. But the concept of Sabbath rest is something that modern society seems to have forgotten.

Rest on the next possible Sunday. It must work. As I type this, Beverly Cleary is 102.

David Letterman 1947

Top Ten Things we Learned from David Letterman About Finance

  1. Don’t try to keep up with the Joneses

David Letterman was always his own man. In the warring-with-Leno years, if he’d once attempted to be a “me too” version of The Tonight Show it never would have worked. His career was long because he didn’t compare himself to the Joneses. He won Emmys because he didn’t compete.

Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter, in their groundbreaking book Rich Dad, Poor Dad, caution against “the Rat Race.” We’re so busy comparing ourselves with everyone else we forget our goals…our soul. Who I AM and what I WANT are personal goals, and don’t need to be tied to stuff or competition.

*How are you different? Are you following your own unique path? What could you eliminate in your life to stop “competing?” – don’t try to keep up with us Joneses.

Ed O’Neil 1946 – watch Married with Children

Image result for ed oneill

Al’s anger is largely directed at women who don’t look like Playboy models, and the show’s misogyny is so casual and pervasive, you fail to notice it after a while. At the same time, for all the enlightened politics of today’s television, I don’t know of another show that so perfectly (if inadvertently) captures the manifold ugly facets of male impotence and rage.

You could watch him as Jay Pritchett, but take today to watch Ed O’Neill as Al Bundy in Married with Children. SIDE NOTE – On my 21st birthday (7/14/93), I asked my best friend Chad – “Am I drunk or is that Al Bundy?” – I was drunk and it was Al Bundy, dancing at The Magic Twanger in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio.

BONUS: Claire Danes 1979 – salad from Omen restaurant in Soho

I found myself fantasizing most heavily and most readily about this one salad I eat at a restaurant called Omen, a Japanese restaurant in Soho.

What makes that salad so great?
It was my centerfold salad. It was avocado and arugula—those two primary ingredients. Then a mushroom in there and I think there must be some kind of miso paste in the dressing. Whatever it is, it’s the best thing ever. It’s one of my favorite dishes of all time.

Avocado & Arugula Salad with cucumber, red radish, oyster mushroom & sesame dressing

*Make yourself this Avocado & Arugula salad for dinner and then reward yourself with the cream cheese flan. You can enjoy both while watching Andy Garcia in Godfather 3 and/or Claire Danes in the series Homeland. Or just keep it light and watch episodes of Married With Children.

Edward Everett 1794

At Gettysburg, Everett held the crowd spellbound for two hours. But his words are not the ones that are remembered from that day. When Abraham Lincoln followed Everett to the podium, the president spoke for only three minutes, but what he said entered the national memory and has remained there ever since.

*A great DYK conversation starter. “Happy Birthday to Edward Everett. Who’s that? Are you kidding? That’s who spoke before President Lincoln at Gettysburg.”

Alessandra Ambrosio 1981

Image result for alessandra ambrosio

Over the weekend, rumors spread that this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai would be Alessandra Ambrosio’s last one ever. Though reports yesterday appeared to confirm the news, the VS Angel refrained from publicly addressing the news herself on social media—until now. In an emotional Instagram post this morning, the model said goodbye to the VSFS, after walking 17 shows.

Ale (or Alessandra) demanded that she wants to have long legs, thinner thighs and also a tight buttock. Leandro worked on her query and as a result, he gave birth to a great idea called “Brazil Butt Lift”

*Perform the Brazil Butt Lift today.

Ethel Kennedy 1928

Despite a life of privilege, Ethel Kennedy is no stranger to tragedy. Her parents were killed in a plane crash in 1955. Besides her husband, she lost two children — Michael in a skiing accident in 1997 and David from a drug overdose in 1984 — and the family has had its share of legal troubles.

*No matter how great someone’s life looks, remember that people are dealing with life’s tragedies all of the time. You don’t know what the people that you encounter today are dealing with.

Michelle Phan 1987

Michelle Phan may have got a humble start on YouTube, but she is well on her way to helming a billion-dollar unicorn: her subscription beauty sampling business, Ipsy, last month raised $100 million to value the company at over $500 million.

“I didn’t have a roadmap, I just did it because it was meaningful to me and I wanted to disrupt the beauty industry,”

“The first advice I give to any women who want to become an entrepreneur is find a problem that you see in any industry, and if you’re very passionate about it, find a solution,”

*You might not have a road map – do what is meaningful to you. With YouTube and social media, the sky is the limit to be an entrepreneur. Find a problem and solve it online for people. What industry can you disrupt?

Mandy Moore 1984

“It’s normal to be curious about the way that the ex looks, etc.,” she says, “but don’t reach out to the ex or attempt to talk to or stalk him or her. This is unhealthy behavior that will upset your new relationship and destroy the trust that you are building.”

Moore’s passion for singing and the stage can be traced back to Park Maitland School, where she attended from kindergarten through sixth grade in the late 1980s and early 1990s. She lived in Longwood with her family but attended the Maitland school because it had a reputation for supporting children and their natural talents — especially in the arts.

*Regardless of what your relationship status is, take this advice from Mandy Moore and leave your ex and your partner’s ex alone.

Daisy Ridley 1992

The parallels between the actress and her Star Wars character are almost comically—cosmically?—accurate. Like Jedi-in-training Rey, Ridley was plucked from obscurity (London, not a junkyard in Jakku) and thrust into a role of great responsibility: reenergizing one of the most beloved film series of all time while holding her own opposite veterans like Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamill, who returns as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

John Madden 1936

Image result for john madden

A lot has changed since Oakland Raiders Coach John Madden spent time on trains drawing up plays with EA (EA) founder Trip Hawkins in 1988. But one thing has remained consistent: The football franchise is still a perennial bestseller for the game publisher.

“Madden is instrumental for EA in the sense that this is relatively easy money,” said Peter Warman, founder of video game research firm Newzoo, who noted that the Madden games sell well on mobile platforms.

But that success does come with a price. EA pays the National Football League and NFL Players Association $50 million to be the exclusive video game licensee, and the company pays John Madden an additional $2 million for the rights to his name.

*Playing Madden could be your entertainment for the day, but realize how much money John Madden has made from lending his name to this video game franchise. He built up his identity as a successful coach and color commentator first. To be a brand you have to create the brand.

She also said that she loves to switch up her workouts with spin, hiking or boxing. On an everyday, this is what Shay eats to fuel her workouts and to get her amazing body:

For breakfast: A smoothie with 1 scoop of protein powder, a big handful of spinach, 1 frozen banana, 1/2 cup of almond milk, 1 tsp. powdered peanut butter, 1 tsp. ground flax, water and ice.

Snack: 2 mashed hard boiled eggs with chili oil, salt and pepper.

Lunch: A huge salad (preferably from a restaurant called Sweetgreen’s) that has organic baby carrots, spinach, shredded kale, spicy broccoli, raw beets, bean sprouts, spicy quinoa, roasted sesame tofu, hot sauce, and carrot chili vinaigrette. Kristen Stewart 1990

“I have been criticized a lot for not looking perfect in every photograph,” she says. “I get some serious shit about it. I’m not embarrassed about it. I’m proud of it. If I took perfect pictures all the time, the people standing in the room with me, or on the carpet, would think, What an actress! What a faker! That thought embarrasses me so much that I look like shit in half my photos, and I don’t give a fuck. What matters to me is that the people in the room leave and say, ‘She was cool. She had a good time. She was honest.’ I don’t care about the voracious, starving shit eaters who want to turn truth into shit.

Hugh Hefner 1926

Even when Hefner does manage to sleep, he doesn’t dream much anymore. He is that rare man without fantasies. He has lived the life he wanted to live, inside a world that he has built to his exacting and permanent specifications. He talks sometimes about the “remaining years,” but not in the way most of us speak about them, with vague notions of unfinished business and aspirations. His only hope is that nothing else changes. “I want the rest of my life to be very much like it is now,”

Do what you love

*Just think if Hugh Hefner would’ve settled on a job to make money instead of doing what he loves. When you get to the end of your life, don’t have regrets. Long to live the last days of your life as you’ve lived most of your life. Wear pajamas all day today.

His point of view is that the old advice of “get a good job, save money, get out of debt, invest for the long term, and diversify” is bad (both obsolete and flawed) advice. This challenges the status quo. His assertion that “your house is not an asset” has stirred controversy, but it has been proven to be accurate in our economy’s current financial crisis.

*Read this book and learn. It is the impetus for 365DOLF’s insistence on you creating your own job through starting your own business and cash flow. Don’t make someone else more money. Dorsett once overslept and missed a Saturday walk-through session with his team.

“Coach Landry told me I wouldn’t start in the game the next day, and I probably wouldn’t have playing time,” said Dorsett.

“I learned the lesson of being accountable. Coach taught me that if you do the little things in life, you can make big things happen. I had won numerous awards, including the Heisman Trophy. And then I learned humility from Tom Landry. He taught me discipline. I think he helped bring me back down to earth.”

There are former NFL players who can barely walk on artificial hips and knees, whose hands are gnarled by arthritis, who have the range of motion of a department-store mannequin. Dorsett is lucky in that regard. The game didn’t rob him of his body.

  • Say what you mean and mean what you say.
  • Always be alert to the source of trouble.
  • Select leaders for accomplishment and not for affection.

Patton’s principles for good health:

  • Brainpower comes from the lungs.
  • An active mind cannot exist in an inactive body.
  • There is no power in a bushel of blubber.
  • Make the mind command the body. Never let the body command the mind.
  • To gain strength, always go beyond exhaustion.

Patton’s principles for making decisions:

  • In the long run, it is what we do not say that will destroy us.
  • Talk with the troops.
  • Know what you know and know what you do not know.
  • Never make a decision too early or too late.
