Lesson #3: Turn Lemons into Lemonade

William Henry Harrison, we hardly knew ye.

Harrison holds the inglorious distinction of having had the shortest presidential term, as he died of pneumonia after just 30 days in office. The pneumonia may or may not have been exacerbated by his Inaugural Address, the lengthiest ever and one delivered in freezing temperatures without the aid of a coat or a hat. Clocking in at almost two hours, the long-winded speech set a record that still stands. It was Harrison’s most noteworthy accomplishment in office.

*Actually turn lemons into lemonade today. Try it. Everyone told Harrison that he was too old to be president, so he wanted the world to see that he could handle that freezing day without a coat or hat. It cost him his life, but he showed them. On your way to the store to buy lemons… wear a coat.

Michael B. Jordan 1987

Image result for michael b jordan creed 2

I hated it. You know, at first you feel like shit, you’re hurting. When things start getting a little easier, when you start lifting weight you never lifted before, when you start bench-pressing 225 pounds 10 times and it ain’t nothing, and then you start giving hugs to girls and they’re, like, feeling you up a little and you think, ‘What’s this?’—then it’s, ‘This is all right.’ So I learned to love it when I started seeing results.”

The sessions combine cardio and circuit training to melt fat off the abs while tightening them, and each muscle group is trained with volume for a maximum pump.

Jordan, who was named after his father, Michael A. Jordan, says his middle name is Bakari. It means “of noble promise” in Swahili.

*After this Michael B. Jordan workout, find someone to hug and see if they notice the results. Watch Creed for motivation. It looks like he is even more jacked for Creed 2.

John B. Cobb 1925

Image result for john b cobb

Born in 1925 to Methodist missionary parents in Japan, he self-identifies today as a liberal Protestant. John’s earliest memories were formed in an interfaith context. The primarily Buddhist culture he encountered, as well as a Canadian missionary school he attended in Kobe, had a profound impact on him. Japan’s culture and religion were substantially different from his own, but that never phased him. “Throughout my career, I have emphasized differences. I’m not one of those people who thinks that all religions are very similar. On the contrary, I think it’s wonderful that they are different. But difference doesn’t mean one is better than the other,”

A unifying theme of Cobb’s work is his emphasis on ecological interdependence—the idea that every part of the ecosystem is reliant on all the other parts. Cobb has argued that humanity’s most urgent task is to preserve the world on which it lives and depends, an idea which his primary influence Alfred North Whitehead describes as “”world-loyalty.”

“We have to think historically, because the controversy between science and religion grew out of a very specific kind of science and a very specific kind of religion … Many forms of religion are not in conflict with any form of science; and there are forms of religion that are in total conflict with science. Take Zen Buddhism, for example, among the most thorough-going of the Buddhist groups. Zen Buddhism is very different from science, but it is not in conflict with science. And it doesn’t get into any conflict with science in the way the Abrahamic religions do.”

*The more I research Cobb, the more I realize how “spot on” he is. Be glad that how different religions are, while realizing that one isn’t better than the other.

Bill Veeck 1914

Bill Veeck was not the first owner to realize that baseball was more than a sport to the players or a business to the owners. He believed that it was entertainment. Due to this he did more than other owners during his time to entertain the fan. The other owners belittled his promotions as travesties but eventually used his ideas and went beyond them.

*Think about what your business is going to be and the possibility that others may belittle you. But what can you do to make your business stand out and eventually have people copying your ideas.

Joe Pesci 1943 – watch Goodfellas

Thelma Schoonmaker (editor): The whole film was improvised, really. [laughs] Scorsese always tells them they have to begin a certain place and end a certain place, but what they want to do in between is okay. For example, when Pesci shoots Spider.

Imperioli: The only line in that scene that was actually scripted was the last one Spider says, which was “Go fuck yourself.”

*Ahh Goodfellas – one of my all-time favorites. Enjoy, because Ray Liotta’s birthday isn’t until December.

Jules Verne 1828

Image result for jules verne

Following really quite amazing comparisons have been made between the trip Jules Verne made in his mind in 1865 in France and what happened hundred years later in the USA:
Verne: The first trip to the moon would be done by United States of America.
– It was.
Verne: The project would cost $5,446,675 in the currency of 1865, $ 12.112 billion in 1969.
– when Apollo 8 project had made the trip around the moon the cost had been $ 14.405 billion.
Verne: There were three men in the missile, Ardan, Barbicane ja Nicholl.
– The astronauts in Apollo 8 were Anders, Borman and Lovell.
– The astronauts in Apollo 11 were Aldrin, Amstrong and Collins.
Verne: The missile would be made of aluminium and weighted 19,250 pounds.
– Apollo 8 capsule was made of aluminium and weighted 26,275 pounds.
Verne: The name of the gun was Columbiad.
– The commando module of Apollo 11 was named Columbia.
Verne: After consideration of 12 different launch sites in Texas and Florida the huge gun was located in Stone Hill, Florida near Tampa.
– NASA considered 7 different launch sites and rejected Texas. The final choice was Merritt Island in Florida.

*Just let all of that soak in and be prepared to share it with family and coworkers today.

On the court, we practice for about an hour. After, I’ll shoot for about 30 to 45 minutes. Then I’ll lift for about 30 to 45 minutes. So nothing too crazy during the season. I’m probably in the gym on a non-game day for about 2 1⁄2 hours.

The mission of the Thompson Family Foundation is to enrich the lives of youth in the United States and the Bahamas through fitness and education.

*Again, it helps to have access to a gym with a basketball court, to combine a shooting workout with some lifting afterwards like a true Splash Brother.

Julio Jones 1989

The good thing about being a rich professional football player is you can afford $100,000 diamond earrings. The bad news is that if you wear them out jet skiing you can lose them in the water. But, as Julio Jones realized recently, there’s a bonus to that, too: You can always just pay some divers to go looking for the earring.

*I’ve been married for over a year now and still don’t have my wife’s ring insured. Until today. I finally have it insured and it’s of similar value to Julio Jones’s (no relation) diamond earring… just take off one zero, any zero. Take today to invest in insurance for something that is valuable to you.

He was ticketed for speeding two hours before his death.
On the afternoon of September 30, 1955, as Dean drove his brand-new Porsche Spyder to a road race in Salinas, California, a police officer ticketed him for going 65 mph in a 55-mph zone. Just over two hours later, a Ford Tudor sedan collided with Dean at the junction of present-day Highway 46 and Highway 41, about 80 miles from Bakersfield. Dean, who broke his neck and suffered severe internal injuries, was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.

But fame and fortune without good money management skills or the ability to hire the right advisers just means your money problems are more expensive.

If there ever was proof of this you only need to look at the life of Gary Coleman, the former child star of the hit sitcom “Diff’rent Strokes.” Coleman obtained wealth and fame only to have it taken away by those who claimed to love him the most. And when his wealth and fame went away, he struggled to find a life in the normal lane with a regular job and income.

Wilder wrote about her childhood for readers who were still enjoying theirs, many of whom developed a great fondness for her characters and their pioneer world.

Laura was 65 years old when Little House in the Big Woods was finally published. All her life she had struggled to make ends meet. The huge success of the Little House books took care of her financial fears and made real a long-held dream of being a writer.

*I am 46. Hopefully 365DOLF will be a published book and journal before I turn 47, but if its not, I’ll keep plugging along until my dream is realized. You should too.

John Deere 1804

Keep moving forward, imagine the future and go for it.

John saw a future where farmers didn’t lose time cleaning off their plow. A debt was repaid and a company was born because of it. Throughout the early history of the company, time and time again growth came because John Deere Company kept moving forward, imagined the future and shaped it.

The new pioneer farmers struggled to turn heavy, sticky prairie soil with cast iron plows designed for the light, sandy soil of New England. John Deere was convinced that a plow that was highly polished and properly shaped could scour itself as it cut furrows. In 1837, he created such a plow, using a broken saw blade.

*I’ve never seen a book or website like 365DOLF. I’ve wanted to give up on this project several times. But I’m going to keep moving forward and imagine a future where everybody is talking about it and using it to better their lives. What is something that you know of that could help people? Imagine a future of that coming to reality because of you.

Chris Rock 1965 – watch Bring the Pain

The bit from Bring the Pain that brought Rock into the comedic hall of fame is a biting and divisive routine that finds the comedian tap-dancing through a minefield. “There’s black people, and there’s n—-s…and n—-s have got to go.” Other than just ruining life for black people, Rock says, the offenders “will brag about some shit a normal man just does… ‘I ain’t never been to jail.’ What do you want, a cookie? You’re not supposed to go to jail, you low-expectation-having motherfucker!” There are a number of amazing bits in Rock’s breakthrough special, but this was the one that put him within spitting distance of Richard Pryor — a cutting piece of social commentary that pushed the envelope, confirmed Rock was the perfect comic for our cultural moment and got a helluva lot of people in trouble around the office watercooler the next day.

Two Jewish brothers, Isidor and Nathan Straus, had become the sole owners of Macy’s in 1896. They were the first businessmen in America to form a mutual aid society to help their employees with medical care. They had a doctor and nurse on the premises. They also provided picnics and sleigh rides, low-cost lunches and Thanksgiving turkeys for their employees.

The German-Jewish family, who owned Macy’s for a century, became well known for their devotion to social welfare, not only for employees, but also the larger community, nation and Israel.

Babe reportedly gorged himself on a dozen to eighteen hot dogs before blacking out, and a week later he was at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York, undergoing surgery for an intestinal abscess. New York writers termed his illness “The Bellyache Heard Round the World,” but in recent years historians have speculated that Babe actually suffered from gonorrhea and not acute indigestion.

The Braves front office kept a handful of the 990,000 letters Aaron received in the early 1970s. He received so many that the U.S. Post Office gave him a plaque for receiving more mail than any other American (not including politicians).

Reflecting on his accomplishments despite all the obstacles, Aaron said it was his motto that got him through: “Always keep swinging.”

“You know, the one thing I’ve always said that I’ve been blessed by, and that is getting recognized by my own peers,” Aaron said, as always with a heavy dose of humility. “Now that didn’t hold true with others during my playing days. There were many times, even now, when I look back on my record and say to myself, ‘Henry, you had this great career for 23 years, and yet, you only won the Most Valuable Player Award once [in 1957, when he helped the Braves win the World Series championship].

“It was the greatest social revolution probably since the suffragettes. And that movement took a hundred years, and this movement will take a hundred years. We’re only halfway through. And we have to count on the younger ones to push it along.”

Betty Friedan Did Not Set Out To Write A Book

The inspiration for the The Feminine Mystique came in the form of a project for her upcoming college reunion. It was during her survey of her former classmates that she came to realize that most of them just weren’t happy in the role of housewife. Initially, she hoped that the information she had gathered would make for a great article, but every women’s magazine she contacted refused to publish it. Instead, she delved in even deeper into the phenomenon of the depressed housewife, and the result was The Feminine Mystic.

*Think about your former classmates. If you were to poll them right now, what would the results of those polls be? How could you change their lives? Friedan helped change an entire generation of women. You could too. I’m hoping that 365DOLF helps improve the lives of everyone in the Lakeview class of 1990 and the Slippery Rock University class of 1995. (And beyond)

Golden Boy Promotions is one of boxing’s most active and respected promoters, presenting shows in packed venues around the United States on networks such as HBO, SHOWTIME, FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes.

“Monday is leg day and we focus on the big lifts — squat, lunge, depth lunge and some total body conditioning. Next day is more core work with abs, twists, low back strengthening and we work flexibility throughout. Then an upper body day that’s all push-pull. We want him using equal weight pushing and pulling because that makes him very symmetrical. So that when you’re throwing a punch, everything is very even.”

*Use today as an upper body day. Try to use the same weight (barbell or dumbbells) and focus on four areas – chest (bench press) – biceps (curls) – shoulders (military press) and back (pull downs). Then use the symmetry of the push-pull workout to throw a punch or two in a boxing workout, just like the Golden Boy.

Rosa Louise Parks was nationally recognized as the “mother of the modern day civil rights movement” in America. Her refusal to surrender her seat to a white male passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus, December 1, 1955, triggered a wave of protest December 5, 1955 that reverberated throughout the United States. Her quiet courageous act changed America, its view of black people and redirected the course of history.

To carry on the lifework of Rosa Parks in youth development and civil rights education/advocacy. Volunteers from professional, technical, community and international backgrounds are recruited and trained to share their knowledge and skills reflecting Mrs. Parks approach to self-development.

Parks didn’t come out of nowhere. She didn’t single-handedly give birth to the civil rights efforts. Instead, she was part of an existing movement for change at a time when success was far from certain.

Stand up for what you believe in

Amal has made a career out of standing up for other people who have been treated unfairly. She is a barrister who specializes in International criminal law and human rights. Like Amal, if you believe in something, don’t be afraid to stand up for it.

The Clooney Foundation for Justice was established in late 2016 to advance justice in courtrooms, classrooms and communities around the world.

We believe that justice means fighting for the rights of individuals unfairly targeted by oppressive governments through the courts. But justice is more than what is meted out in courts, it is litigated in communities as well. Advancing the cause of justice also means advancing justice for marginalized and vulnerable communities targeted by hate; justice for displaced children deprived of opportunities to learn; justice for refugees seeking to rebuild their lives abroad.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?
I have a positive outlook. Sometimes I feel my face carries too much weight. When I notice it around my jawline, I watch what I eat.

The Harry Potter and Star Wars star was caught on the receiving end of a cruel jibe after a Twitter user posted an offensive tweet on Sunday about the actor’s family, who were all born with forms of dwarfism. However, the 47-year-old actor wasted no time in drawing attention to the nasty tweeter – who referred to his family as ‘midgets’, which is an incredibly derogatory term for those who are of small stature – and was greeted by hordes of fans who came to his defense.

Davis was born with the condition spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenital (SED), which caused his dwarfism.

Let’s celebrate this upcoming February 3. It is the birthday of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive an M.D. from an American medical school in 1849. She is best known for her tireless support of medical education for women and her public reform work. It is also the day that the Physicians Mom Group (PMG), a non-profit organization of almost 50,000 women, is declaring National Women Physicians Day. This day would celebrate all the significant contributions that women physicians make daily, none of which would have been possible without Elizabeth Blackwell.

Blackwell embodied the ABC characteristics of extraordinary women physicians.

  1. Attentive
  2. Brave
  3. Compassionate

Blackwell was inspired to become a physician after a close friend who was dying suggested that she would have suffered less if her physician had been a woman. As a physician, she had an uncanny ability to show concern and kindness not only to her patients, but also to others in general. She advocated for public reform as she espoused that medical issues were often caused by societal problems such as poverty and lack of education.

*Elizabeth Blackwell’s compassion and take on reform in medicine needs to be revisited almost 200 years after her birth. Medical malpractice led to the severity of my father’s stroke and then I watched as my parents had to go on Medicaid to pay the bills for a litany of nurses, doctors, and administrators with little to no compassion at all. Sorry for the rant – but it was good for my soul.

In 1973, Rockwell established a trust to preserve his artistic legacy by placing his works in the custodianship of the Old Corner House Stockbridge Historical Society, later to become Norman Rockwell Museum at Stockbridge. The trust now forms the core of the Museum’s permanent collections. In 1976, in failing health, Rockwell became concerned about the future of his studio. He arranged to have his studio and its contents added to the trust. In 1977, Rockwell received the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Setting Up a Trust

Maybe you’re thinking about how to better manage your property, or you want to make sure your family will be taken care of after you’re gone. If you’re having these thoughts, you might want to think about setting up a trust. A trust is basically a transfer of legal title from the owner (the grantor, trustor, or settlor) to an institution or person (a trustee). The trustee then administers the trust according to the trust terms for the benefit of a beneficiary. There are various factors to consider when setting up a trust. These factors include the size of the estate, the age, and marital status of the grantor. FindLaw’s Setting Up a Trust section provides information and tips to help you set up a trust.

It helped her think about how to make someone “really psycho and funny and aggressive and sexual, but also make her sweet enough that you still like her and think that she’s endearing in some way.” She also used a friend’s “crazy eye” and a “really bad” laugh to get the gig.

“I’m not perfect, but who are we kidding, neither are you.” Hey, let’s get one thing straight, if someone tells you that you have flaws, accept it. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad about being human. Jeremy always felt like he could never belong. During the game of touch football he was seriously athletically challenged and kept getting hurt. But in the movie he finds a girl who celebrates and even loves his flaws and that is what life is about. If we don’t expect the fact that us humans can make irrational mistakes, we will never be able to overcome failures and celebrate our triumphs.
