Knute Rockne 1888

Image result for knute rockne

Be a renaissance man. Knute was a jock who loved sports and was passionate about football. But he cultivated his mind too. While a student at Notre Dame, he didn’t let his role as an athlete take away from his studies. A diligent student, Rockne’s average was a 90.52% (this was before the grade point system). He was equally adept as science (receiving a 97% in chemistry) as he was in English and philosophy (earning a 98% and 94% respectively). He also found time to serve as a yearbook editor and play the flute in the orchestra (if Knute Rockne played the flute, I may have to reconsider the manliness quotient of that instrument). Knute graduated magna cum laude from Notre Dame and was offered a job as chemistry assistant at the school, a position he took in addition to various coaching jobs.

Rockne’s first team went 3-1-2 in a season shortened by World War I, and he began upgrading the schedule the next year. The 1919 and 1920 teams were unbeaten, led by Gipp, a renegade who enjoyed pool, poker, partying and skipping classes. Though Rockne had a deserved reputation for toughness, his pragmatism helped him deal with Gipp’s escapades. Rockne called the all-purpose back “the greatest player Notre Dame ever produced.”

*Being a Renaissance man (or woman) is the whole point of why you’re still reading 365DOLF. Mind-Body-Soul! (money, entertainment, and food too). Strive to be the best person you can be.

Rebecca Gratz 1781

Image result for rebecca gratz

Rebecca Gratz believed that with an “unsubdued spirit” she could overcome all of life’s difficulties. A pioneer Jewish charitable worker and religious educator, Gratz established and led America’s first independent Jewish women’s charitable society, the first Jewish Sunday school, the Philadelphia Orphan Asylum, and the first Jewish Foster Home in Philadelphia. She surmounted the grief caused her by the deaths of many family members and loved ones, confronted Christian evangelism, and became a civic leader. Gratz’s accomplishments grew out of her own indomitable spirit and her commitments to both Judaism and America.

*Have an “unsubdued spirit” today so you can overcome all of today’s difficulties.

Garrett Morgan 1877

Unable to sell his gas mask to fire departments in the South, Morgan hired an actor friend to pose as an inventor while he dressed up as an Indian chief. The actor would announce that Big Chief Mason would go inside a smoke-filled tent for ten minutes. When Morgan emerged after 25 minutes unharmed, people were amazed. Business boomed.

*Think about what your business will do to amaze people so business can boom.

Antonio Vivaldi 1678

‘The Four Seasons’ may well be his most famous piece, but Vivaldi wrote more than 500 other concertos for other instruments including mandolin, cello, flute, viola d’amore, recorder, and lute. Around 230 of these are for violin – he was, after all, a violinist, like his father.

*Relax, unwind, and stimulate your mind while listening to Antonio Vivaldi.

If you think Herschel Walker is some kind of weight room warrior you would be wrong, Herschel has never been into weightlifting, all of his exercises are body weight exercises. He started doing sit-ups and push-ups as a kid, as many as 5000 a day and still to this day he does 750-1500 pushups every day as well as 3000 sit ups. He also mixes in 1,500 pull-ups, 1000 dips, and 1000 squats every day. For cardio he will run up to 8 miles and do sprints as well. He also does a regimen of martial arts and MMA after he has completed this workout every morning.

*Pick one of the above. 750 pushups, 3000 sit ups, 1500 pull ups, 1000 dips, 1000 squats, run 8 miles, or complete an MMA workout. You’ve got all day, and because of Bell, you’ve got all night to complete this.

Chief Joseph 1840

It was that heartfelt outpouring of words that touched the hearts of people everywhere. It provided a stone to stand upon, a common ground that all could understand, no matter white or red. Joseph’s words created a tiny crack in the wall of fear and hatred, by showing the hunger and pain of his people. His words made everyone understand that we are all humans, all frail creatures who need the comfort of home and family. Not savages, not ruthless marauders, but flesh and blood with hearts that can break from pain.

*Important words to remember, “We are all humans and all frail creatures.”

EARLY LESSON: Don’t spend more than you have. That’s the lesson his parents instilled in him early. “They owned credit cards, but they rarely used them. I use mine, but I make sure I only charge what I know I can pay in full at the end of the month.”

*Have I mentioned how much I hate credit cards? Cut them up! Don’t use them. I get the advice of paying them off every month and there are perks and rewards to doing that. But it is so hard. If you have the willpower to do it, good for you.

His statement today, at a Seattle event called the Smart Kitchen Summit, also served as an announcement that he would join a new “eating technology” company called as chief content and innovation officer.

For starters, says Tyler Florence, no more recipes. They don’t work for our modern lifestyle anymore.

“Everyone who’s working on recipes now—you’re wasting your time,” he says. “Inflexible recipes don’t work with the modern lifestyle anymore. They need to be re-translated to fit how real people actually cook and use technology.”

After running away from his family as a teenager, Houston lived for nearly three years with the Cherokee tribe in eastern Tennessee. Houston learned fluent Cherokee, embraced the tribe’s customs and was given the name “Black Raven.” After resigning in disgrace as Tennessee governor, the despondent Houston took refuge with the Cherokee in the Arkansas Territory. Jon Bon Jovi 1962

The best advice his dad has passed along, he says, is to slow down and take the time to produce the highest quality product.

Bongiovi (Bon Jovi’s son) admits that his instinct was to launch the wine company “as fast as possible. I get kind of worked up on things and my dad has always been there to say: ‘Don’t just do it fast. Do it right. Make sure that this is going to be the absolute best that it can be because, once it’s out, there’s no taking it back.'”

Wherever possible Bon Jovi plays consecutive nights at the same venue to cut back on setup and strike costs. By playing 12 shows in 19 days at London’s O2 arena the band saved $300,000.

The Roethlisburger: Look, up in the sky. It’s a hamburger… it’s a cheeseburger… it’s the Roethlisburger! This burger/sausage behemoth, named after Pittsburgh Steelers’ QB, was created by Peppi’s Old Tyme Sandwich Shop during Big Ben’s rookie season, when he led the Steelers to a 15-1 record and the AFC Championship game. This burger contains nearly 12 ounces of ground beef, 12 ounces of sausage, and since Ben’s an All-American scrambling QB, it’s topped with American cheese and two eggs. Of course, when in the Steel City, squirt some Heinz ketchup on it.

Ron Howard 1954

Instead of trying to force or “push” his ideas into the minds of other people, Ron Howard uses “pull.” He gets decision-makers excited, asks good questions to draw out their creativity, and incorporates their feedback.

He turns listeners into collaborators, partners, and allies.

*Try to get someone to think like you today by leading them to what you want and making them think it was there idea all along. Ron Howard did just direct the Han Solo movie, so consider this his form of a Jedi mind trick.

Kesha 1987

Kesha loves a challenge! I switch it up all the time. Today, we did a 24-minute Tabata-inspired routine that only focused on arms using 10-pound weights, an eight-pound ball and a resistance band. So she did a total of six exercises for four minutes each (20 seconds on, 10 seconds off). Then for the second half, we did Pilates that mainly focused on her core.

*Start your day by brushing your teeth with a bottle of Jack, then Tabata and Pilates becomes your challenge today. Do all of this while listening to Kesha. It’s going down for real.

What counts is your legacy

“The curse of this time, and the biggest evil that has contaminated the arts, is commercialization. The banks run culture and the artist often capitulates. I preferred a time when you were surrounded by independence and what counted was the vastness of the opportunity. Many artists and writers and musicians died broke but they left a rich artistic legacy.”

In 1964, Belafonte convinced a hesitant Poitier to help him deliver $70,000 stuffed into a doctor’s bag to Freedom Summer volunteers in the South. They were met by Klansmen who chased them and fired guns at them.

Learn To Invest

You may be surprised to learn that Justin Bieber invests heavily in tech startups. Forbes estimates that Justin has invested around $3 million into a variety of different tech startups. Although many of the startups that Justin Bieber invests in don’t link directly back to him (much like an endorsement), he still continues to invest in startups.

Investing is a great way to earn a bit of money on the side. Whether you invest in startups, stocks, property or other things, it’s important that you learn to take advantage of the options available to you.

Most Americans, and young people in particular, waste their money on food. But with seven albums and a Grammy win under his belt, pop star Justin Bieber is worth approximately $225 million, so he can afford to waste his money in more exciting ways.

So, wellness is mind first: meditating. Then body: exercising and being aware of what you’re eating. And a dog is good to have around.

This meditation exercise is an excellent introduction to meditation techniques.

  1. Sit or lie comfortably. You may even want to invest in a meditation chairor cushion.
  2. Close your eyes. We recommend using one of our Cooling Eye Masksor Restorative Eye Pillows if lying down.
  3. Make no effort to control the breath; simply breathe naturally.
  4. Focus your attention on the breath and on how the body moves with each inhalation and exhalation. Notice the movement of your body as you breathe. Observe your chest, shoulders, rib cage, and belly. Simply focus your attention on your breath without controlling its pace or intensity. If your mind wanders, return your focus back to your breath.

*Meditate. Exercise. Eat well. Play with your dog. Don’t have a dog?…you know what to do.

Act with honor and integrity.

“Good people are happy when something good happens to someone else.”

Focusing on the process instead of the final result, which is often outside of one’s control, is good advice for all areas of life.

Carolina, in consultation with the Smith family and with their full support, created The Dean E. Smith Opening Doors Fund to honor the legacy of the legendary coach, who championed the cause of access to higher education and opportunity for all. This endowment fund will make college a reality for outstanding undergraduates from lower-income families and enable professionals in education and social work — two fields close to Coach Smith’s heart — to pursue advanced degrees. Students supported by the fund will exemplify Coach Smith’s qualities of leadership, service and excellence. Their presence on campus will immortalize the impact of his life for generations to come.

As with Sandy Hook and Pulse before, and now Parkland, the Route 91 shooting has ignited calls for some to speak out about the gun lobby and tighter gun control. This is a tricky proposition with country music, which has had ties to the NRA, a portion of its fan base that leans conservative, and a cultural affiliation with firearms. Aldean, being a gun owner and a father, could potentially bring some nuance to the conversation, but he doesn’t see any upside to doing that. Instead, he’d rather see our elected leaders do their jobs.

*Jason Aldean was on stage in Las Vegas when the bullets started flying. As I type this, it is the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. Listen to Jason Aldean today and wonder why he won’t do more than rely on our elected leaders to do their job.

John Steinbeck 1902

If you have to make a difficult or life-changing decision, don’t let anyone else decide for you. It’s your life. Don’t let anyone “shoot your dog” for you.

Fear and confidence, questioning and hope are part of the paradox of life, of what is. “There are mysterious things which [can] not be explained if man is the final unit,” Steinbeck wrote more than seventy years ago to Carlton A. Sheffield. Perhaps there is both hope and fear in living with the awareness that “species, including our own, are only commas in a sentence.” Indeed, we are only a part of the bigger story we find ourselves in.

*Your next reading suggestion is another book you may have read in high school – Of Mice and Men. If you did, reread it as an adult and notice the change in your perspective. And remember that it’s your life. Don’t let anyone make life changing decisions for you.

To play in the NFL you’ve got to lift weights. You’ve got to be strong. I went from working out with 120-130 pound dumbbells down to 70-pound dumbbells, and I won’t go up. I’ll just do more reps now. Higher reps, less weight. I think my body is reflecting that. I’m not as big, because I’m not as strong as I used to be.

A Psalm of Life

What The Heart Of The Young Man Said To The Psalmist.

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,

Life is but an empty dream!

For the soul is dead that slumbers,

And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest!

And the grave is not its goal;

Dust thou art, to dust returnest,

Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,

Is our destined end or way;

But to act, that each to-morrow

Find us farther than to-day.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,

And our hearts, though stout and brave,

Still, like muffled drums, are beating

Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world’s broad field of battle,

In the bivouac of Life,

Be not like dumb, driven cattle!

Be a hero in the strife!

Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant!

Let the dead Past bury its dead!

Act,— act in the living Present!

Heart within, and God o’erhead!

Lives of great men all remind us

We can make our lives sublime,

And, departing, leave behind us

Footprints on the sands of time;

Footprints, that perhaps another,

Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,

A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,

Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,

With a heart for any fate;

Still achieving, still pursuing,

Learn to labor and to wait.

*Live life to its fullest, find a purpose, and leave a lasting legacy for future generations. A Psalm of Life is meant to encourage you to spend your life, however short it might be, in pursuit of meaningful, compassionate acts that will change the lives of others…. those living, and those to come.

When it came to deciding what to buy, Taylor relied on a mix of gut feelings and expert advice. Before renovating her home, for example, she would bring in outside experts like realtors to analyze whether it would add value. When she wore jewelry, she chose it based on her taste.

Taylor reportedly owned $150 million in jewelry alone when she died, and all the gems will be auctioned off to raise money for the Elizabeth Taylor HIV/AIDS foundation and amfAR.
