Laura Ingalls Wilder 1867

Wilder wrote about her childhood for readers who were still enjoying theirs, many of whom developed a great fondness for her characters and their pioneer world.

Laura was 65 years old when Little House in the Big Woods was finally published. All her life she had struggled to make ends meet. The huge success of the Little House books took care of her financial fears and made real a long-held dream of being a writer.

*I am 46. Hopefully 365DOLF will be a published book and journal before I turn 47, but if its not, I’ll keep plugging along until my dream is realized. You should too.

Charles Dickens 1812

In his Christmas address, he shows his skill as a storyteller. The shocking image of the little boy in the egg box stays with the potential donor, just as it stayed with Dickens himself. Appealing to heart and head, no wonder Dickens was such a good fundraiser.

Imagine seeing your children slowly starving… and having nothing to feed them. For countless destitute families, this is a grim reality. For every $3.65 you donate you can feed a hungry child for a month.

*In honor of Dickens’ birthday, think of donating to Food for the Poor.

John Deere 1804

Keep moving forward, imagine the future and go for it.

John saw a future where farmers didn’t lose time cleaning off their plow. A debt was repaid and a company was born because of it. Throughout the early history of the company, time and time again growth came because John Deere Company kept moving forward, imagined the future and shaped it.

The new pioneer farmers struggled to turn heavy, sticky prairie soil with cast iron plows designed for the light, sandy soil of New England. John Deere was convinced that a plow that was highly polished and properly shaped could scour itself as it cut furrows. In 1837, he created such a plow, using a broken saw blade.

*I’ve never seen a book or website like 365DOLF. I’ve wanted to give up on this project several times. But I’m going to keep moving forward and imagine a future where everybody is talking about it and using it to better their lives. What is something that you know of that could help people? Imagine a future of that coming to reality because of you.

Chris Rock 1965 – watch Bring the Pain

Image result for chris rock gif

The bit from Bring the Pain that brought Rock into the comedic hall of fame is a biting and divisive routine that finds the comedian tap-dancing through a minefield. “There’s black people, and there’s n—-s…and n—-s have got to go.” Other than just ruining life for black people, Rock says, the offenders “will brag about some shit a normal man just does… ‘I ain’t never been to jail.’ What do you want, a cookie? You’re not supposed to go to jail, you low-expectation-having motherfucker!” There are a number of amazing bits in Rock’s breakthrough special, but this was the one that put him within spitting distance of Richard Pryor — a cutting piece of social commentary that pushed the envelope, confirmed Rock was the perfect comic for our cultural moment and got a helluva lot of people in trouble around the office watercooler the next day.

*No need to be a low-expectation-having motherfucker, you are going to love this Chris Rock comedy special.

They aren’t particularly complex life lessons — work hard, respect others, be at ease with yourself and that words matter

When Reagan left office in 1989, the die was cast and the world he influenced was already safer, freer and better, thanks to the contributions he made every day of his presidency.

*Some of you reading this consider Reagan the greatest president ever and the champion of the Republican Party. Others will read this and roll your eyes at such a notion. Either way, be like Reagan today and “be at ease with yourself”, knowing that you can’t please everyone.

Everybody has to be constantly conscious of the fact, it’s your body, it’s your health, it’s the cancer that’s affecting you.

Get involved in the fight.

*Hopefully you or no one you love has cancer right now. Take today to see a doctor or make an appointment to get a full cancer screening. I hope that you come out of that doctor’s office cursing my name because you paid all of that money just to be told that you have no cancer.

Isidor Straus 1845

Two Jewish brothers, Isidor and Nathan Straus, had become the sole owners of Macy’s in 1896. They were the first businessmen in America to form a mutual aid society to help their employees with medical care. They had a doctor and nurse on the premises. They also provided picnics and sleigh rides, low-cost lunches and Thanksgiving turkeys for their employees.

The German-Jewish family, who owned Macy’s for a century, became well known for their devotion to social welfare, not only for employees, but also the larger community, nation and Israel.

Isidor Straus was a highly-assimilated, German-Jewish American who made use of social networks and business connections in both Jewish and Gentile worlds.

Ida Straus 1849

Lunch – hot dog and a beer

Babe was fond of drinking a quart mixture of bourbon whiskey and ginger ale at breakfast, before attacking a porterhouse steak garnished with half-a-dozen fried eggs and potatoes on the side.

Babe reportedly gorged himself on a dozen to eighteen hot dogs before blacking out, and a week later he was at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York, undergoing surgery for an intestinal abscess. New York writers termed his illness “The Bellyache Heard Round the World,” but in recent years historians have speculated that Babe actually suffered from gonorrhea and not acute indigestion.

Racist hate mail

The Braves front office kept a handful of the 990,000 letters Aaron received in the early 1970s. He received so many that the U.S. Post Office gave him a plaque for receiving more mail than any other American (not including politicians).

Reflecting on his accomplishments despite all the obstacles, Aaron said it was his motto that got him through: “Always keep swinging.”

“You know, the one thing I’ve always said that I’ve been blessed by, and that is getting recognized by my own peers,” Aaron said, as always with a heavy dose of humility. “Now that didn’t hold true with others during my playing days. There were many times, even now, when I look back on my record and say to myself, ‘Henry, you had this great career for 23 years, and yet, you only won the Most Valuable Player Award once [in 1957, when he helped the Braves win the World Series championship].

*As I continue to work on 365DOLF, I have good days and bad days. I’m going to steal from the home run king and have the motto of “Always keep typing”. Whatever your goals are, come up with your own motto – “Always keep __________”

Bobby Brown 1969

Don’t lose yourself in the expectations of others.

Bobby Brown had a lot of pressure on him throughout his life. He had strong parental figures who looked to him to be their saving grace from a life of poverty. Then there were record producers and other music moguls seeking to direct his career, the mothers of his children demanding his time and attention, and, of course, his raving fans who craved more music.

I have a lot of friends who gasp, and I mean literally gasp, when I say that I’m not going to force my kids to go to college. My son, Avery, is a talented guitarist, so there’s no reason he needs to attend a regular college to take classes in math and English unless he wants to do that. He just wants to go head-on into advancing himself as a musician.

Betty Friedan 1921

“It was the greatest social revolution probably since the suffragettes. And that movement took a hundred years, and this movement will take a hundred years. We’re only halfway through. And we have to count on the younger ones to push it along.”

Betty Friedan Did Not Set Out To Write A Book

The inspiration for the The Feminine Mystique came in the form of a project for her upcoming college reunion. It was during her survey of her former classmates that she came to realize that most of them just weren’t happy in the role of housewife. Initially, she hoped that the information she had gathered would make for a great article, but every women’s magazine she contacted refused to publish it. Instead, she delved in even deeper into the phenomenon of the depressed housewife, and the result was The Feminine Mystic.

*Think about your former classmates. If you were to poll them right now, what would the results of those polls be? How could you change their lives? Friedan helped change an entire generation of women. You could too. I’m hoping that 365DOLF helps improve the lives of everyone in the Lakeview class of 1990 and the Slippery Rock University class of 1995. (And beyond)

Oscar De La Hoya 1973

Los Angeles-based Golden Boy Promotions was established in 2002 by Oscar de la Hoya, the first Hispanic to own a national boxing promotional company. Golden Boy Promotions is one of boxing’s most active and respected promoters, presenting shows in packed venues around the United States on networks such as HBO, SHOWTIME, FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes.

“Monday is leg day and we focus on the big lifts — squat, lunge, depth lunge and some total body conditioning. Next day is more core work with abs, twists, low back strengthening and we work flexibility throughout. Then an upper body day that’s all push-pull. We want him using equal weight pushing and pulling because that makes him very symmetrical. So that when you’re throwing a punch, everything is very even.”

*Use today as an upper body day. Try to use the same weight (barbell or dumbbells) and focus on four areas – chest (bench press) – biceps (curls) – shoulders (military press) and back (pull downs). Then use the symmetry of the push-pull workout to throw a punch or two in a boxing workout, just like the Golden Boy.

Rosa Parks 1913

Rosa Louise Parks was nationally recognized as the “mother of the modern day civil rights movement” in America. Her refusal to surrender her seat to a white male passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus, December 1, 1955, triggered a wave of protest December 5, 1955 that reverberated throughout the United States. Her quiet courageous act changed America, its view of black people and redirected the course of history.

To carry on the lifework of Rosa Parks in youth development and civil rights education/advocacy. Volunteers from professional, technical, community and international backgrounds are recruited and trained to share their knowledge and skills reflecting Mrs. Parks approach to self-development.

Parks didn’t come out of nowhere. She didn’t single-handedly give birth to the civil rights efforts. Instead, she was part of an existing movement for change at a time when success was far from certain.

*Get out of your comfort zone and ride the city bus today. I had no idea how to do it. I simply went to the nearest bus stop and waited. The wait itself opened my eyes to people less fortunate than I am. Once on the bus, I sat as far to the back as I could and just observed a different world than what I am used to. It was good for my soul.

A player who revolutionized the game of football, Lawrence Taylor is a Hall of Fame linebacker who spent his entire career with the New York Giants. LT is one of the greatest players in the history of football, and has been ranked as the top defensive player in league history by former players, coaches, media members, and news outlets such as the NFL Network and Sporting News.

LT lost a fortune with lavish spending, hard partying, and by sniffing—doing a lot of sniffing. Since leaving the league, Taylor’s been arrested a handful of times for drug possession, was caught by the IRS filing a false tax return, and declared bankruptcy in the late 90s.

Stand up for what you believe in

Amal has made a career out of standing up for other people who have been treated unfairly. She is a barrister who specializes in International criminal law and human rights. Like Amal, if you believe in something, don’t be afraid to stand up for it.

The Clooney Foundation for Justice was established in late 2016 to advance justice in courtrooms, classrooms and communities around the world.

We believe that justice means fighting for the rights of individuals unfairly targeted by oppressive governments through the courts. But justice is more than what is meted out in courts, it is litigated in communities as well. Advancing the cause of justice also means advancing justice for marginalized and vulnerable communities targeted by hate; justice for displaced children deprived of opportunities to learn; justice for refugees seeking to rebuild their lives abroad.

*Use today to stand up for something you believe in. Donate time to that cause or start your own charity to help those who can’t help themselves.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?
I have a positive outlook. Sometimes I feel my face carries too much weight. When I notice it around my jawline, I watch what I eat.

The Harry Potter and Star Wars star was caught on the receiving end of a cruel jibe after a Twitter user posted an offensive tweet on Sunday about the actor’s family, who were all born with forms of dwarfism. However, the 47-year-old actor wasted no time in drawing attention to the nasty tweeter – who referred to his family as ‘midgets’, which is an incredibly derogatory term for those who are of small stature – and was greeted by hordes of fans who came to his defense.

Davis was born with the condition spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenital (SED), which caused his dwarfism.

Elizabeth Blackwell 1821

Image result for elizabeth blackwell

Let’s celebrate this upcoming February 3. It is the birthday of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive an M.D. from an American medical school in 1849. She is best known for her tireless support of medical education for women and her public reform work. It is also the day that the Physicians Mom Group (PMG), a non-profit organization of almost 50,000 women, is declaring National Women Physicians Day. This day would celebrate all the significant contributions that women physicians make daily, none of which would have been possible without Elizabeth Blackwell.

Blackwell embodied the ABC characteristics of extraordinary women physicians.

  1. Attentive
  2. Brave
  3. Compassionate

Blackwell was inspired to become a physician after a close friend who was dying suggested that she would have suffered less if her physician had been a woman. As a physician, she had an uncanny ability to show concern and kindness not only to her patients, but also to others in general. She advocated for public reform as she espoused that medical issues were often caused by societal problems such as poverty and lack of education.

*Elizabeth Blackwell’s compassion and take on reform in medicine needs to be revisited almost 200 years after her birth. Medical malpractice led to the severity of my father’s stroke and then I watched as my parents had to go on Medicaid to pay the bills for a litany of nurses, doctors, and administrators with little to no compassion at all. Sorry for the rant – but it was good for my soul.

Norman Rockwell 1894

In 1973, Rockwell established a trust to preserve his artistic legacy by placing his works in the custodianship of the Old Corner House Stockbridge Historical Society, later to become Norman Rockwell Museum at Stockbridge. The trust now forms the core of the Museum’s permanent collections. In 1976, in failing health, Rockwell became concerned about the future of his studio. He arranged to have his studio and its contents added to the trust. In 1977, Rockwell received the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Setting Up a Trust

Maybe you’re thinking about how to better manage your property, or you want to make sure your family will be taken care of after you’re gone. If you’re having these thoughts, you might want to think about setting up a trust. A trust is basically a transfer of legal title from the owner (the grantor, trustor, or settlor) to an institution or person (a trustee). The trustee then administers the trust according to the trust terms for the benefit of a beneficiary. There are various factors to consider when setting up a trust. These factors include the size of the estate, the age, and marital status of the grantor. FindLaw’s Setting Up a Trust section provides information and tips to help you set up a trust.

*Take today to establish a trust to preserve your legacy.

“I’m not perfect, but who are we kidding, neither are you.” Hey, let’s get one thing straight, if someone tells you that you have flaws, accept it. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad about being human. Jeremy always felt like he could never belong. During the game of touch football he was seriously athletically challenged and kept getting hurt. But in the movie he finds a girl who celebrates and even loves his flaws and that is what life is about. James Joyce 1882

Image result for james joyce

James Joyce is widely considered to be one of the most important literary figures of the 20th century, and of Ireland. Known for reworking myth into contemporary narratives, as well as incorporating the character of the city into his works, Joyce was one of the key players of Modernism, whose works came to define the movement.

“THERE are two kinds of people. Those that have read “Ulysses” and those that haven’t,” my best friend stated plumply one day, dropping the surprisingly compact 783-page paperback on the table with a thud. This was meant in a silly, snobbish kind of way, but he was right. Given the flood of ecstatic imagination between the covers of James Joyce’s novel, its more patient readers are marked for life by having read it.

*There have been a lot of recommendations for books to read. If you can, start Ulysses today and ignore all other reading endorsements until you have finished it. Be the kind of person who has read it.

I think variety is the spice of sticking with an exercise routine, whether it’s getting a dance tape one day, or getting a tape with those stretchy things to work with resistance on a different day. Arm yourself with a few different things. Ask your friends to go jogging or on a long walk. Sign up for a dance class. I really think that mixing it up it keeps it fun. And that’s really the only way that you can stick with it.

On their final show, Dick read a letter he and Tom had gotten from former President Johnson. Johnson, reflecting on his treatment by the Smothers Brothers, responded by writing:

“It is part of the price of leadership of this great and free nation to be the target of clever satirists. You have given the gift of laughter to our people. May we never grow so somber or self-important that we fail to appreciate the humor in our lives?”

*Appreciate the humor in your life today. If you had to roast yourself, what would you say? What is funny about your life? What would be sad if it weren’t so true?

Ayn Rand 1905

“Until and unless you discover that money is the root of all good, you ask for your own destruction. When money ceases to be the tool by which men deal with one another, then men become the tools of men. Blood, whips and guns—or dollars. Take your choice—there is no other—and your time is running out.”

Ayn Rand wrote volumes urging people to be selfish.

What? Aren’t people already too selfish? Just do whatever you feel like, be a thoughtless jerk, and exploit people to get ahead. Easy, right? Except that acting thoughtlessly and victimizing others, Rand claims, is not in your self-interest.

What Rand advocates is an approach to life that’s unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. Selfishness, in her philosophy, means:

  • Follow reason, not whims or faith.
  • Work hard to achieve a life of purpose and productiveness.
  • Earn genuine self-esteem.
  • Pursue your own happiness as your highest moral aim.
  • Prosper by treating others as individuals, trading value for value.

At the dawn of our lives, writes Rand, we “seek a noble vision of man’s nature and of life’s potential.” Rand’s philosophy is that vision. Explore it for yourself.

Objectivism, a philosophy for living on earth.

In this lesson, Ayn Rand lays out the basic tenets of Objectivism, including her position on the nature of reality, the efficacy of reason, man’s highest moral purpose, and the ideal politico-economic system.

In 1978, I was working in the White House Office of Management and Budget and thinking, I’ve got to do something more creative and fun than writing nuclear energy budgets! I came across an ad in the New York Times for a specialty food store for sale in the Hamptons and I decided to investigate. My husband Jeffrey and I drove to Long Island the next day to see the store and it was love at first sight. I had no experience in the food business – or in any business! – but I knew that this was exactly what I wanted to do. I made the owner of the store a low offer, thinking I’d go home and decide if I really wanted to make such a dramatic move. The owner called me the next day and said, “I accept your offer!” Yikes! Hughes’ poetry shows how a good poem can do what our routine political palaver doesn’t, which is to make us feel something deeper than the anger that animates the way we argue about our problems. If only for a moment, it shines a light through the fog.

The past has been a mint
Of blood and sorrow.
That must not be
True of tomorrow.

*As you start your second month of the year, hopefully everything has gone well. But if the past month or your past in general, has been a mint of blood and sorrow, remember that must not be true of tomorrow.

Not for the faint of heart, this circuit is made up of stability exercises – demonstrated by none other than MMA fighter Ronda Rousey — to improve upper-body and core strength, both of which are important for MMA fighting.

What to do: Perform the prescribed number of reps for each move, then immediately move onto the next. After your last exercise, return to the first move and repeat the circuit up to three times. (Beginners, follow the tips with each exercise to make the moves easier.)

*Follow the above workout that made Ronda Rousey, at one time, “The Baddest Woman on the Planet”

Thomas Campbell 1763

Live to God; be devoted to him in heart, and in all your undertakings. Be a sincere Christian— i.e., imbibe the doctrines, obey the precepts, copy the example, and believe the promise of the gospel. And that you do so, read it, study it, pray over it, embrace it as your heritage, your portion… Live by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, both “for wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.” Above all things, attend to this, for without him you can do nothing, either to the glory of God or your own good.

His son, Alexander Campbell, wrote of him: “I never knew a man, in all my acquaintance of men, of whom it could be said with more assurance that he, “walked with God.”

*Live to God today. Be devoted to him in heart and in all undertakings. Live by faith today for wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. Walk with God today.

Clark Gable 1901

Don’t act against your financial self-interest.

Of course, all your motives shouldn’t be mercenary. But Scarlet and Rhett understand, long before many of their friends and family, that the Civil War is a fight that the South cannot win. Its cotton- and slave-based economy can’t survive against the North, whose economy is bolstered by manufacturing and trade with other countries. Ultimately, many of their friends lose their lives fighting in the war, and those who survive are left impoverished. Even Ashley Wilkes, Scarlett’s long-time love, realizes that fighting to maintain the old system is a fool’s errand, yet he persists. His decision, if not for Scarlett’s financial help, would have left him without a penny to his name.

*When you make decisions about your financial future, make sure you’re thinking prudently about the consequences of your choices, and don’t let emotions or ideology guide your actions.

Sherman Hemsley 1938 – watch The Jeffersons

Image result for sherman hemsley

The Jeffersons, like its parent show All in the Family, was hardly the usual depiction of the American experience on network television. It waded into treacherous and uncertain waters, pulling its viewers into currents of class and race avoided by most network shows. The confluence of these forces left in its wake vocabulary and expressions unlikely to be taught to us in any ESL or citizenship classes, and impossible to imagine being used on a broadcast network today: Honkey, zebra, nigg—, goin’ to the john, she’s a fox.

*Watch as many episodes of The Jeffersons as you can, while realizing that it was on in primetime on network television. It’s a series that would probably have to be on Netfilx or FX today.

Lisa Marie Presley 1968

With all the hoopla that has surrounded her, it’s easy to forget that Lisa Marie Presley is at heart a simple Southern girl whose earliest musical memories are of obsessively listening to 45’s in her bedroom at Graceland and of her dad catching her singing into a hairbrush in front of a mirror at the age of three.

The Lisa Marie

Elvis had his fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches—Lisa Marie has taken the sandwich to a whole new taste dimension by adding bacon, cheese and chocolate sauce. (We’re guessing the real Lisa Marie knows nothing about this sandwich…but hey, it’s all in fun!)

*There will be a lot of healthy recipes provided this year. This is not one of them. Consider this a cheat meal to start the month of February. Thank you. Thank you very much.

Jackie Robinson 1919

Image result for jackie robinson hall of fame

Most of us will never have the opportunity to do something as momentous as Robinson. But we can speak up when we see injustice happening around us, especially when the general population seems indifferent to it.

“A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives,” Jackie Robinson was once quoted as saying. It’s a statement that captures the spirit with which he lived his life — from baseball player to civil rights pioneer — and one that rings true today.

Jackie’s message suggests that fostering an inclusive culture is everyone’s responsibility, whether you are a bank, a baseball player, a filmmaker, or simply a citizen of the world. With much emphasis on what drives us apart today, we celebrate the moments that can unite communities around the belief that everyone should have a fair shot at achieving their greatest potential.

*As a citizen of the world, work each day on fostering an inclusive culture where everyone should have a fair shot at achieving their greatest potential. And this includes you! Watch the movie 42 for inspiration.

How the Scandal star stays cool, calm and totally in control.

Though she and the other Scandal actresses have made regular hikes around Los Angeles a group ritual, Pilates is Washington’s anchor. “There are a lot of forms of exercise where you have to leave yourself out of the room while you force yourself to do this thing,” she explains. “With Pilates, I get to bring my true self. I cry, I laugh. I get to go: Where is my body today? What do I need today? How can I take care of myself and push myself past my comfort zone? How can I be both loving and challenging?”

*Take care of yourself and push past your comfort zone with a Pilates class. As always, start with an introductory class where applicable.

Ernie Banks 1931

Image result for ernie banks hall of fame

Before there was Walter Payton and Michael Jordan in Chicago as icons, there was Ernie Banks, and you couldn’t get enough of him. His smile and enthusiasm and love of life and of people was something I had never experienced. Period.

Banks was active in the Chicago community during and after his tenure with the Cubs. He founded a charitable organization, became the first black Ford Motor Company dealer in the United States, and made an unsuccessful bid for a local political office. In 2013, Banks was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contribution to sports.

But Banks was best known as “Mr. Cub,” a legendary icon of the beleaguered Chicago team that never even reached the playoffs during Banks’ illustrious career. Despite this, Banks is remembered for his infectious smile, charming personality, and “let’s play two” eagerness.

*Have Ernie Bank’s “let’s play two” eagerness today. Embrace today’s challenges with a smile and an enthusiasm and love of life.

Nolan Ryan 1947

“I didn’t retire,” he said. “I just don’t play baseball. One thing I’m short of is time.” Aside from his ranches and the Round Rock Express, he owns a bank in Alvin; he set up the Nolan Ryan Foundation, which will open an exhibit at Alvin Community College this spring; and he serves on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission, to which he was appointed by his old friend Governor George W. Bush.

*Don’t retire – just don’t do your current job any more. Now is the time to be financially prepared for retirement. You might not be able to own a ranch, baseball team, or bank – but take today to think about what your income will be upon retirement.

Justin Timberlake 1981

“I’m here to tell you that you and your choices matter,” Timberlake said.

He said that the values that his parents instilled in him have extended throughout his life.

“My parents did their best to fill my young mind not with prejudice and hate, but with compassion and love,” he said.

He added that those lessons made him surround himself with people with a myriad of backgrounds in both his life and work.

He also urged young viewers not to “waste” their youth.

“Be part of the solution, not part of the problem,” the singer said. “Don’t waste your 20s … be nice to your parents – I hope my son watches this one day. Go out, do the impossible and go on and become the greatest generation yet.”

*You may have had your fill of listening to boy bands a few days ago, so focus on JT’s solo work today and if you get real ambitious watch the movie Trolls, where he was nominated for an Oscar for his song “Can’t Stop the Feeling”

Portia de Rossi 1973 – vegan red beans and rice

I’ve always seen myself as an animal lover, but honestly, my affection didn’t extend to all animals. I categorized them: Dogs were smart, loyal, and loving, so they were more valuable than, say, goats or pigs. I think that’s why I never thought twice about eating meat. Steak and burgers weren’t an everyday meal, but I definitely accepted meat as a necessary part of life. That all changed five years ago, when Ellen [DeGeneres] and I moved to a farm in California.

*You had Ellen’s vegan tacos just 6 days ago, now enjoy her wife’s vegan red beans and rice.

FDR 1882

Image result for fdr

You are usually stronger when you work through others. Paralyzed from the waist down by polio, Roosevelt was forced to rely, for political success and his very survival, on family, friends and aides.

In the lead-up to Pearl Harbor, he tapped five extraordinary men – well-bred diplomat Sumner Welles, Republican adventurer and future spymaster “Wild Bill” Donovan, social worker and fixer Harry Hopkins, GOP presidential nominee Wendell Willkie, and railroad heir Averell Harriman –and sent them on special missions to Europe that were crucial to the war and the American century that followed. These five envoys were the inspirations and instruments of FDR’s foreign policy.

*Which 5 extraordinary men or women would you tap for a special mission? Reach out to those 5 today and let them know how important they are to you and that if ever needed help, you would call upon them, just like FDR. And yes, Bill Murray plays FDR in the movie Hyde Park on Hudson

Christian Bale 1974

I tie a plastic ice pack around my face and commence with the morning’s stretching exercises. Afterwards I stand in front of a chrome and acrylic Wash mobile bathroom sink – with soap dish, cup holder, and railings that serve as towel bars, which I bought at Hastings Tile to use while the marble sinks I ordered from Finland are being sanded – and stare at my reflection with the ice pack still on. I pour some Plax antiplaque formula into a stainless-steel tumbler and swish it around my mouth for thirty seconds.

*Do the American Psycho morning ritual this morning. Possibly make it a daily habit – without the murdering that follows.

Fred Korematsu 1919

His last political act was to advocate on behalf of Muslims detained in the wake of September 11, 2001. Citing similarities between the wrongful imprisonment of Japanese-Americans during World War II and Muslims during the War on Terror, Korematsu filed multiple briefs with the Supreme Court on behalf of Guantanamo Bay prisoners and Muslim-American detainees. He remained an activist on the issue until his death, in 2005. He was 86 years old.

In 2010, the Governor of California signed the legislative bill establishing Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution on January 30 in perpetuity. This is the first state-wide day in U.S. history named after an Asian American. Korematsu’s growing legacy continues to inspire people across diverse communities and demonstrates the importance of speaking up to fight injustice.

We need volunteers to help us during our annual event every January. We also need help to brainstorm, coordinate, and outreach in the months leading up to the event.

Please email us at info@korematsuinstitute.org for more information.

*In honor of Fred Korematsu, email his institute and let them know that you’d like to help out next year on this date. This is a way to help maintain civil liberties by donating time and not money.

Gene Hackman 1930

For me, money was a passage forward. I had a really tough time as a young actor in New York. So when I earned a little money — literally just enough to eat and have a roof over my head — it gave me the confidence to get into acting classes, to make a step with my career. It was extremely important to me.

“Popeye Doyle, the New York narc created by Gene Hackman in ‘The French Connection,’ was the most compelling of characters, a man driven by violent hungers that had little to do with his job as a cop. He needed the violence, maybe, to survive the toughest beat in town. He had such presence, such a capacity to explode, that when he ran a bust on a bar, the patrons — pretty tough themselves — were actually intimidated. Popeye was something unique among film characters, and Hackman deserved the Oscar he won for the performance.”
– Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

  • 1972

Alvin C. Copeland Sr., opens “Chicken on the Run” in the New Orleans suburb of Arabi, serving traditional Southern-fried chicken.

After several months of lackluster performance, he reopens the restaurant as “Popeyes” (after Popeye Doyle of The French Connection). This time he sells spicy, New Orleans-style chicken.

  • 1976

Popeyes opens first franchise restaurant in Louisiana.

*Use some of your hard earned money to advance in your career or invest in your future business today. Sign up for a class or workshop, or maybe just buy a book that will help you get your thoughts together for your future entrepreneurship.  It worked out ok for Gene Hackman as he has won 2 Oscars – Unforgiven and The French Connection – watch The French Connection while eating some Popeyes chicken.

Phil Collins 1951

As Phil Collins has explained numerous times over the years, “In the Air Tonight” (as well as most of the Face Value album) deals with his bitterness and frustration over the end of his marriage to his first wife, and the lyrics do not reference any specific real-life event.

*Listen to Phil Collins as a single act and\or with his group Genesis.  Either way, you will be able to sing along with a lot of these songs, and perform a serious air drum solo towards the end of In the Air Tonight.

Steve Marriott 1947

Marriott started a classic blues rock band named Humble Pie with Peter Frampton.  They put out several albums, appreciated by a small segment of rock fans.  The band’s early 70s heyday was fleeting and nowadays few remember the band.

In the United States, to “eat humble pie” means to apologize for one’s actions. But humble pie is also an actual dish that you can eat. Its origins are, appropriately, humble. Although there are fancy recipes, humble pie began as a medieval European dish consisting of the scraps of the master’s food baked into a pie. “Humble” began as the Middle French word “nomble,” meaning “scrap.”

*Enjoy this Humble Pie recipe as you are about to finish out your first month of 365DOLF. You could probably use some humble pie at this point, because you have been killing it for almost a solid month! Bring on the next 11!
