Abraham Maslow 1908

Self-Actualization Needs
Maslow describes self-actualization as a person’s need to be and do that for which the person has a vocation. It is his ‘calling’, a full expression of his or her creative potential. It is to be autonomous and fully-functioning. If these needs are not met, the person feels restless and frustrated, even if successful in other respects.

*Take the above free online career test to see if maybe you need to change what you do for a job to fill your creative potential.

Sean Taylor 1983

“You started hearing stories of him getting dropped off at the facility in the morning and then he’d jog back home. Then he started jogging to work and jogging home. In everyone’s eyes he was already one of the best, but his thought was he’s going to go even further and higher,” former Redskins running back Clinton Portis said. It was about a 3-mile jog from Taylor’s apartment to the facility, meaning he’d jog an extra 6 miles a day when he ran to the facility and back.

*Jog to work and back home today. Or at least park 3 miles from work and jog to and from in honor of the late Sean Taylor

Alberta Hunter 1895

Image result for alberta hunter

Hunter dropped out of show business for two decades starting in 1956 in favor of working as a licensed practical nurse at a hospital in the New York City area. She broke from this routine only once, in 1961, in order to make a justly celebrated album for Bluesville which reunited her with her old friends Lovie Austin and Lil Hardin Armstrong. None of her patients or co-workers at the hospital had any idea who she was or what a famous name she had been, and Hunter preferred it that way.

*If money weren’t an issue, what dream job would you want? Which job would be good for your soul?

James Fisk 1835

Image result for james fisk

He was ruthless in getting what he wanted and thought little of taking people’s money (through Wall Street and business dealings) if he thought it would make him just a little richer. He was killed at the age of 37 by a former business associate.

*Is your quest for getting richer, going to get you murdered by the age of 37? If so, today is the day to make the necessary changes. It may just save your life one day.

Mackenzie Davis 1987 – watch Izzy Gets the F**k Across Town

Image result for mackenzie davis gif

Davis is truly magnetic and one particular scene between she and Coon—with years of pent-up resentment expressed through a duet, show entirely in shot-reverse-shot like a conversation as though they weren’t in a room full of people watching—is easily the movie’s standout.

*Watch the very talented Mackenzie Davis help get Izzy across town.

Debbie Reynolds 1932 – tootless beans

Image result for debbie reynolds

Debbie Reynolds, the Oscar-nominated singer-actress who was the mother of late actress Carrie Fisher, has died at Cedars-Sinai hospital. She was 84.

“She wanted to be with Carrie,” her son Todd Fisher told Variety.

She was taken to the hospital from Carrie Fisher’s Beverly Hills house Wednesday after suffering a stroke, the day after her daughter Carrie Fisher died.

Al Gore 1948

Image result for al gore

Democrat Al Gore conceded the extraordinarily close 2000 presidential race with a memorable quote from his father: “No matter how hard the loss, defeat might serve as well as victory to shape the soul and let the glory out.”

*Think of your most recent loss and focus on how it may have been a victory that has shaped your soul.

Gordie Howe 1928

Image result for gordie howe

Mark noticed what he called a “big decline” in Howe’s mental health last summer. Still, when Mark would go out to exercise, his dad would come along.

“He can walk fine,” Mark said. “If I go for a run, he can walk 3.5 miles no problem. Doesn’t even sweat. He’s still incredibly strong. He still has great endurance.”

*Walk 3.5 miles on the treadmill while reading a book to keep your mind sharp too.

Vincent van Gogh 1853

Image result for vincent van gogh

The big picture won’t become clear until you step away from it.

Up close, Vincent’s brush strokes are a mess, only resolving into a masterpiece from a distance. In fact, one of my favorite things to do is to toggle back and forth in front of one of his paintings, marveling at how the impetuous swirls and gobs of paint become trees and stars and people when you step just a few feet away.

This truth could be applied to the artist himself as well. During his lifetime, he experienced one apparent failure after another, both artistically and personally. Only after his death was his true genius recognized. Ironically, as he wrote, “Success is sometimes the outcome of a whole string of failures.”

Due to Van Gogh’s extreme enthusiasm and dedication to first religion and then art coupled with the feverish pace of his art production many believe that mania was a prominent condition in Van Gogh’s life. However, these episodes were always followed by exhaustion and depression and ultimately suicide. Therefore, a diagnosis of bipolar disorder or manic depression makes sense with the accounts of these episodes in Van Gogh’s life.

*Step back from your most recent failure and see if you would still label it a failure, or is it part of a string of failures that will lead to your success.

Richard Sherman 1988

The Richard Sherman workout transforms him into the best defensive back he can be. The cornerback says there are three drills central to Legion of Boom training. The Seattle Seahawks workouts focus on amplifying the DB’s footwork, acceleration, conditioning and explosiveness.

*He’s no longer with the Seahawks or the Legion of Boom but after doing his workout, you’ll realize why Richard Sherman was one of the best defensive backs of his generation.

Eric Clapton 1945

Image result for eric clapton

“It asked a very pertinent question,” Clapton later told Mojo. “Because I don’t really know. … I have a belief in a higher power, but I don’t really know whether – most of those old religious things say, ‘See you over there.’ And you think, ‘Really? How do you know?’ And the song asked that question. And I’m always wondering whether … we meet people again. I think what works about that song is it’s a question. That doesn’t offend anyone. It’s asking for help. It works for people. It’s a great way to communicate, asking for help.”

*Listen to Tears in Heaven and communicate with someone if you need help.

Celine Dion 1968

Image result for celine dion

Dreams can come true

Dion was just a 12-year-old kid performing in her parents’ piano bar in Charlemagne, Que., the youngest in a Catholic family of 14, when she and her mother and brother wrote “Ce n’etait qu’un rêve,” which translates to “Nothing But a Dream.” Her mother sent the tape to Quebec music manager René Angélil and it moved him to tears. Angélil bet the farm on Dion (as in, he re-mortgaged his house to finance her career) and she was well on her way to fulfilling her dream of being a singer. She’s now the bestselling Canadian artist of all time.

*Listen to Celine Dion as you dream of your success and how your dreams are going to come true. A good way to start would be to move someone to tears.

Tracy Chapman 1964

Image result for tracy chapman

“The world’s a mess,” says Tracy Chapman flashing a winning smile and then breaking into laughter. The 24-year-old singer-songwriter is well aware of her reputation for seriousness, and she has just stopped herself, nearly breathless, after railing against a catalog of social ills. Chapman, whose powerful debut album, Tracy Chapman, addresses such issues as racism and violence against women, is perfectly capable of laughing at herself. What she is not interested in doing is lightening up her music.

*Laugh at yourself today as you listen to Tracy Chapman.

Norah Jones 1979 – fried chicken and onions

9-time GRAMMY winner Norah Jones comes full circle with Day Breaks, her stunning sixth solo album which is a kindred spirit to the singer’s breakout debut Come Away With Me and finds Norah returning to the piano and her roots.

Harrison Ruffin Tyler, 89, is one of two living grandsons of President John Tyler, who was born in 1790, one year after George Washington was sworn in as president.

So has Clyde changed with age?

Yeah, I was kind of an extremist. I liked to go out. Now, I’m an even-keeled guy. I rarely go to discos. The things I like to do now don’t cost me money. A little walk in the park, a kiss after dark. I’ve mellowed with age.

*Do something that doesn’t cost you money. Have soul like “Clyde” and take a little walk in the park with a kiss after dark.

Sam Walton 1918

Walton – one of the richest men in America – admitted that he barely knew his youngest son and that he even neglected his grandchildren. His wife stayed with him out of commitment. He admitted he spent way too much time investing into his business rather than spending time with those who mattered most – his own family!

*Don’t wait until you are on your deathbed to realize what Sam Walton realized! Make your life count today and leave a legacy that is worth more than any trust fund you’ll leave your children!

Brendan Gleeson 1955 – watch Braveheart

Image result for brendan gleeson hamish

One of the most common questions I’m asked is how factual Mel Gibson’s portrayal of William Wallace was in the 1995 film Braveheart. The short answer is that is hasn’t an iota of fact in it.

Dubliner Gleeson played hulking warrior Hamish, Wallace’s lifelong friend.

Last seen in Tom Cruise’s blockbuster Edge Of Tomorrow, the honorary Scot is one of the most respected and in-demand actors in the business.

*Whether it’s factual or not, enjoy watching Braveheart today. Remember that ENTERTAINMENT is an escape from reality – not a history lesson. Says the history teacher.

Thomas Clarkson 1760

On his way home to London he had a spiritual experience. He later described how he had “a direct revelation from God ordering me to devote my life to abolishing the trade.” Clarkson was worried that as a young man if he had the necessary skills to “qualify him to undertake a task of such magnitude and importance”. However, each time he doubted, the result was the same: “I walked frequently into the woods, that I might think on the subject in solitude, and find relief to my mind there. But the question still recurred… surely some person should interfere.”

*Walk into the woods to think in solitude. See if there is something that you should dedicate your life to and if you are the person that should lead to change.

Create Limited Choice

In the next section of the movie, “Vincent Vega and Marsellus Wallace’s Wife”, Vincent goes to buy heroin from Lance. Lance presents Vincent with three seemingly identical options in plastic bags. Yet he introduces each option with a name, and where it is from.

From there, Lance reduces choice for Vincent to two options. Two of the choices, Lance explains, are the same price with a very similar high. However, Lance focuses on the more expensive choice. Sure you pay for more, he explains, but the experience will be vastly different.

“The first two are great, but this one? This one is a mad man.”

Lance may be wearing a bathrobe, but in this scene he does a brilliant sell of an expensive product. First, he differentiates each product, naming them to help Vincent see differences. Then, he reduces the buy to an either or. Why? To push Vincent into buying the more expensive, higher quality product.

Too many choices can actually overwhelm the consumer, making them less likely to choose any product at all. One psychologist found that for every 10 mutual funds the employer offered, the participation rate declined by 2%. Why did people participate less when they had more variety? It was so overwhelming, the employees put it off.

*Create limited choice. Especially when you first start your business. Make it easier on the customer and you. And remember, drugs are bad. Watch Pulp Fiction for motivation.
