Leonard Nimoy 1931

“It’s my adventure, my trip, my journey and I guess my attitude is, let the chips fall where they may.”

Nimoy taught us about not pushing too hard against the path life sets out for us. He always relished and protected the character of Spock (1975’s “I Am Not Spock” was more about proving there was more to him than just one character, and was followed up by 1995’s “I Am Spock”), and did his best to avoid typecasting. Don’t forget, he appeared in 49 episodes of “Mission: Impossible” (the original “Star Trek” only ran for 79).

This is why Spock’s brain is so unique — he’s got the flexibility of a human mind combined with the strength of Vulcan emotions. Yes, his human side might make it more difficult for him to control his Vulcan feelings, but the integration of the two gives him the opportunity to quickly think in very creative ways.

*Don’t push too hard against the path that life has set out for you. Just make sure that it is your path. Quickly think, in a creative way, if you’ve missed out on your true path in life.

Be Happy

There is no better medicine than finding joy in your life. Regardless of life challenges, it’s good to always be happy. “Ross always looks like she swallowed the sun. If you’ve experienced her on stage, somehow you feel like she’s singing right to you and for you. It feels like her light turns your light on.”

Show up for your own life, with joy.

*Look like you’ve swallowed the sun today, listen to some Diana Ross, and have your light turn someone else’s light on.

Steven Tyler 1948

Aerosmith made more money from ‘Guitar Hero’ than from any one of its albums

So how are musicians supposed to turn a profit? The real answer is probably something like Aerosmith’s strategy. While in an era where it’s basically free to create digital copies of songs, music itself isn’t scarce at all, recognizable and marketable brands of the kind you can sell to, say, the makers of Guitar Hero are still scarce. An artist’s brand is singularly her own, and as such, possesses incredible profit-making potential.

TNT is reporting that, during a feature on an upcoming Australian edition of ’60 Minutes’ the Aerosmith front man was confronted with the rumor that, over the course of his career, he blew $20 million on blow. Tyler came back with a smaller figure.

“No, probably, realistically, 5 or 6, easy,” he said.

*In a world where it is harder and harder to charge people for things, your brand will set you apart. Just don’t spend all of your brand money on cocaine. Listen to Aerosmith for inspiration.

So here goes. In honor of turning 30 40 (ahem), here’s what I’ve learned:

I’ve learned that the most important thing in life, business, motherhood and all else is to never compromise on your integrity. Don’t compromise yourself — you’re all you’ve got.

*Watch This is 40 and don’t compromise yourself.

Gloria Steinem 1934

Image result for gloria steinem

Steinem sets the record straight about the oft-demonized feminist movement. Its purpose is not to attack men but “to free the uniqueness of the individual and to understand that inside each of us is a unique human being who is a combination of heredity and environment.” And in this pursuit, tremendous headway has been made, but there is still much more to be done.

The mission of the Ms. Foundation for Women is to build women’s collective power to realize a nation of justice for all.

*Think about what makes you so unique as an individual. Think about your personality and which parts you were born with and which parts you’ve learned. And finally think about which parts of your personality and thought process that you would like to change for the better.

Sarah Jessica Parker 1965

Her obsession for gym and workouts actually popped up after the birth of her twin daughters in 2009. Apart from spending two incessant hours in the gym, she ran five miles on a daily basis during that time. Her skinny body and the bulging veins of her arms actually manifested the hard workouts she undertook. However, before late, she realized the importance of moderation in workouts and trimmed her extensive workout hours.

*Go for the skinny body and bulging veins version of Sarah Jessica Parker aka Carrie Bradshaw – 2 hours in the gym today and finish it up with a 5-mile run.

Harry Houdini 1874

As a teenager in New York City, Houdini was a member of several athletic organizations, competing in bicycle races, foot races, and boxing matches. He would plunge into the fast-moving East River to get his swimming fix, and running a ten-mile circuit in Central Park was an effortless feat for him. He tried out for the U.S. Olympic swim team as a teen (he didn’t make the cut), by 17 he was already an amateur boxer, and by the time he turned 18, he had beaten Sidney Thomas, a British racing champion, in a 20-mile race.

Wernher Von Braun 1912

Wernher von Braun has the prestige of actually taking mankind from the simple beginnings of rocketry all the way to the moon and the planets.  His name is almost synonymous with rocket science.  He is an icon of the space age.

Eventually humans will spread into the cosmos at large. One cannot set a timeline, but by 3001 “interstellar humanity” will likely follow. We do not know what surprises and challenges we will find. But they will be there and humans will revel in them. That is the nature of humans with their inbuilt curiosity and penchant for exploration, one might say the very definition of what it is to be human.

*Here is a good conversation starter for you today. By the end of this year, your name will become synonymous with great conversation. You will be an icon of the water cooler.

Brandon Marshall 1984

When I first heard the term “mental health,” the first thing that came to mind was mental toughness. Masking pain. Hiding it. Keeping it inside. That had been embedded in me since I was a kid. Never show weakness. Suck it up. Play through it. Live through it.

Now, I realize that mental health means the total opposite.

*See your therapist today. It is not weakness – it is showing strength. Maybe your therapy could be tossing around the football with a close friend.

When they get sick and need medical help, some of them don’t have the financial means they need, so I want to see that they have the help they deserve. I want to pay for a room in the hospital and other costs.’

Pat Robertson 1930

Robertson presented himself as a shepherd of souls, but in his quest for temporal power, he led his flock astray and left their faith to wither. This isn’t the story one usually hears about the rise of the religious right, but for Christians, it is perhaps the more important one.

*Don’t put your faith in one man to guide you to the promise land. Guide yourself there through education and soul searching.

Rick Harrison 1965

Of course with the good comes the bad. Harrison admits that he is not immune to mistakes and “in business you have to be innovative, but so are crooks.  A couple of times I got lazy and didn’t pay attention to new and improved fakes, so a few times I lost some big money on Rolex’s.”

Never Stop Learning

“You know the greatest danger facing us is ourselves, an irrational fear of the unknown. But there’s no such thing as the unknown– only things temporarily hidden, temporarily not understood.”

Captain Kirk may have a reputation as a suave ladies’ man, but don’t let that exterior cool fool you. Kirk’s reputation at the Academy was that of a “walking stack of books,” in the words of his former first officer, Gary Mitchell. And a passion for learning helped him through several missions. Perhaps the best demonstration of this is in the episode “Arena,” where Kirk is forced to fight a Gorn Captain in single combat by advanced beings. Using his own knowledge and materials at hand, Kirk is able to build a rudimentary shotgun, which he uses to defeat the Gorn.

*Have a passion for learning as you watch Captain Kirk and the whole gang in the original Star Trek.

Don’t Give Up

According to Winston Churchill, “continuous effort, not strength or intelligence, is the key to unlocking our potential.” The thing with individuals today is that they want instant success. However, success is a process that needs to be carefully tendered. You can start small and work your way up to the top. Even in your small continuous efforts, you will succeed.

“Radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam in a country like the United States.” Those words were not spoken by Osama bin Laden but by comedienne turned talk-show hostess Rosie O’Donnell on a nationally broadcast program in October. Her statement generated a wide range of reactions. A new nationwide survey of that reaction, conducted by The Barna Group, suggests that although few Americans would challenge her right to make such statements, just as few share her point of view.

The mind that has been restored to prominence by the cognitive revolution . . . executes cognitive processes. It perceives the world, organizes sense data into meaningful wholes, processes information, and so on. In fact, the mind seems to be merely the double of the person whose mind it is. It is a replica, a surrogate, a doppelganger. Take any sentence in which ”the mind” is said to do something and see if the meaning is substantially changed if you substitute ”person.” . . .
