Alan Turing 1912

Just as Sir Isaac Newton used mathematics to push back the bounds of our understanding of the movements of the planets and other heavenly bodies, Alan Turing was already making the mathematics to take us into the strangely embodied, and even more strangely disembodied, informational world we live in today. He seeks to map out mathematically the wilds where logic meets information. And The Imitation Game movie is the machine which bears us to the meaning intrinsic to, yet beyond, the mundanities of historical incident.

*Watch The Imitation Game to see how Alan Turing uses mathematics to take us into the informational world we live in today.

LaDainian Tomlinson 1979

Tomlinson kept his speech to 26 minutes, but I could have listened to him for twice as long. That’s how inspiring the message was from the former running back, who not only revealed the depth of his heart but also challenged America to develop a unified soul.

He segued into his closing theme by sharing his family’s roots, traced back to his great-great-great grandfather, George Tomlinson, who came to America on a slave ship 170 years ago from West Africa. Tomlinson reminded fellow Americans that unless they are Native Americans, their ancestors came here from somewhere else.

WHERE IS THE DANGER IN TWO PEOPLE THAT LOVE EACH OTHER BEING MARRIED?— Traits and cardinal aspects aside, the overbearing societal rules hovering over the right and privilege of marriage cloud the picture.  Unfair prejudices have tried to govern the love that constitutes and creates those unions.  When you look at a brief list of the civil benefits of marriage allowed by the law, one should ask where is the harm in granting those items to two people regardless of race or other orientation, especially if they love each other and wish to raise a family.  Those that oppress such forget that route of the American Dream.  Progress has been made in the courts, but society has a long way to go for full acceptance.

The star’s weight peaked at 350 pounds in the early 2000s, but his struggle with obesity began long before then. As a child in Louisiana in the 1960s, he grew up eating delicious yet fatty foods like sausage and grits and bread pudding. But everything changed during his early days at American Idol, when he got a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes from his doctor. Dan Brown 1964

I was raised Episcopalian, and I was very religious as a kid. Then, in eighth or ninth grade, I studied astronomy, cosmology, and the origins of the universe. I remember saying to a minister, “I don’t get it. I read a book that said there was an explosion known as the Big Bang, but here it says God created heaven and Earth and the animals in seven days. Which is right?” Unfortunately, the response I got was, “Nice boys don’t ask that question.” A light went off, and I said, “The Bible doesn’t make sense. Science makes much more sense to me.” And I just gravitated away from religion.

#10 Julie & Julia (2009; nominated for Best Actress, lost to Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side)
Sight unseen, it was easy to dismiss Julie & Julia as just another Streep stunt, the revered chameleon taking on the accent and demeanor of beloved celebrity chef Julia Child. But although she nails Child’s adorable, slightly wobbly essence, Streep goes far deeper than that, finding the pathos in a quiet revolutionary who faced a good amount of sexism both in her professional and personal life by daring to be a working woman in the 1950s. Especially compared to the underwhelming “Julie” half of director Nora Ephron’s comedy-drama — the usually great Amy Adams is stuck playing a mopey modern gal — Streep’s moving performance was a reminder of how easy it is to take what she does for granted.

  1. Sophie’s Choice(1982; won Best Actress)
So this is the Streep performance that made everyone realize — at the age of 33 — that we were dealing with an all-timer.

Sartre and De Beauvoir applied their principle of freedom, above all, to their own partnership, a magnificently successful one that lasted half a century from its beginning in 1929 to Sartre’s death in 1980. What was your most memorable meal? What, where, who? Details, please.

AG: My mother cooked me a birthday dinner at home when I was 11 or 12. Scallops in their shells and my favorite chocolate caramel cake. All the recipes are in my new cookbook. Best meal I can ever remember eating.

Scallop Gratin with Scallions

Scallops with cheese? In this case, yes. My mother makes this as a holiday staple and I can still remember the first time I ate it as a kid. She ran out of the kitchen with the large scallop shells, sizzling, filled with this recipe. These are delicious, and the portion so small that it leaves you wanting more. Be warned: People may leave the table, shells in hand, and go somewhere and lick the crust of bread crumbs and leftover sauce from the shells in private. I also recommend some bread for sopping up the juices.

Pascal argues that our failure to understand the principles of reality is due to both our impatience and a certain lack of moral imagination:

Those who are accustomed to judge by feeling do not understand the process of reasoning, for they would understand at first sight, and are not used to seek for principles. And others, on the contrary, who are accustomed to reason from principles, do not at all understand matters of feeling, seeking principles, and being unable to see at a glance.

Many questions arise simply because man lets himself be enticed into the domain where questions lie, instead of keeping firmly to the domain of certainty, If a man is confused by something, he should first of all come back to the certainty that it is not this world as such which is important, but the next world, and above all that God is Reality; and he should say to himself: in the face of this truth, which in principle is the solution to all questions, this or that question just does not arise; it is enough if he has the Answer of answers.
