Piet Mondrian 1872

After WWI, Mondrian returned to Paris where the city was slowly becoming a hotbed for creativity, experimentation, and partying—he was huge fan of the Paris nightclub scene and frequented the boîtes whenever possible. However, while in Paris, “his lack of success gave him severe doubts,” and made him think about finding a job as a waiter or a grape picker. Janseen notes:

*Don’t give up on your passion – just to make a living.

Franco Harris 1950

The drink is part of Bordi’s ACLR8 RECOV (Accelerate Recovery) product line venture with Franco Harris, a former Nittany Lion.  Most protein drinks on the market include one type of protein that disseminates into the body in a short period of time. However, Bordi’s research led him to develop a formula that includes three different types of protein — whey, soy and casein — which disseminate into the body gradually over about six hours.

Lynn Swann 1952

Swann was instructed to eat every three to four hours in order to keep his metabolism active. Previously, his diet was heavy in carbohydrates; Hawk switched him to a more sensible 40/40/20 diet: 40% of his diet was carbs, 40% protein and 20% from fat.

*Two Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Steelers share a birthday (and 4 Super Bowl titles). Use Swann’s 40/40/20 diet and make sure to include Franco’s recovery drink. Go Steelers!

Willard Scott 1934

“Willard reminded everybody that there’s this whole, wonderful, quirky, fascinating country out there,” Savannah said. “He loved introducing America to America.”

That’s “because Willard was America in a lot of ways,” noted Tom Brokaw.

Former TODAY anchor Katie Couric, who summed up her description of the 81-year-old legend with three words: joyful, funny and ebullient.

*Announce to the world that you will be “ebullient” today… aka joyful, enthusiastic, cheerful, jolly. Do this every day and you might just live to be 100.

Practice Good Estate Planning

Three Estate Planning Items Everyone Needs

Many people mistakenly believe that estate planning is only necessary for the wealthy. In reality, a basic estate plan is essential for everyone, regardless of income or net worth, because we all want to minimize confusion, unnecessary costs, and stress for loved ones after a death.

      1. An up-to-date will or trust.
      2. A durable power of attorney.
      3. Updated beneficiary designation forms.

*Watch the 1st episode of Breaking Bad and then plan your estate today. Hopefully you won’t realize that you’ve got to manufacture and sell meth to accomplish your goals.

Jenna Fischer 1974 – watch The Office

Image result for jenna fischer

What I love most about Pam is that sometimes she does or says something dumb. She makes mistakes and she fails. She doesn’t eat only what is healthy or wear what is most fashionable. She loses her patience and dates (and almost marries) the wrong guy. But she is also kind and warm and funny and helps people that she sees need it, she never loses sight of who she is or gives up trying to be better.

Pam helped me see that though we are not perfect and will always fall short, we are still capable of doing good and deserving of love.

*Never lose sight of who you are. Never give up trying to be better. Watch The Office for motivation.

*After watching Breaking Bad and The Office, eat Rachel Weisz’s spiced apple pie and watch her in The Constant Gardener for dessert.

Michelangelo 1475

Image result for michelangelo

If we look at the ancient scriptures that describe a kundalini awakening where boundless spiritual energy is freed from the root of the spine and travels up the spinal column to bring energy to the pineal gland in the center of the brain – it seems obvious what Michelangelo is trying to say – no religion, no science can keep humankind from ascending spiritually.

“Ancora Imparo” I am still learning

He said that at age 87, the last year of his life. When he was assigned the task of painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling not only did he not care for painting, but he was by no means an expert at it. Had Michelangelo not accepted this offer he would have gone down as arguably the greatest sculptor of all time. By taking up that task, he threw his name in the hat for the greatest painter of all time as well.

*You know that I love this – “No religion, no science can keep humankind from ascending spirituality.”

Always be learning. Even if you’re the greatest there ever was, there is no reason you can’t be even better.

Tim Howard 1979

“I am constantly strengthening my core because that’s what gives me the ability to react faster and the stability to control my body better,” Tim says.

Core Strength:

  • Med Ball Russian Twists: 3 sets of 10 reps each side
  • Dead Bugs: 3 sets of 10 reps each side
  • Physio-ball Roll-outs: 3 sets of 10 reps

“That’s because your core muscles are the base of support for your entire body,” says Meredith McHale, P.T., D.P.T., regional clinical director at Professional Physical Therapy. They completely surround and support your spine and pelvis and connect your upper body and lower body, effectively transferring forces from one to the other.

*Complete Tim Howard’s core strength workout and then play a game of soccer – it’s ok if you play goalie today.

But I do know that if this is a government by the people, and I’m one of the people, and the government is the one with guns—I know that it is immoral for me to use the government to use force, to use guns, to do anything that I wouldn’t do myself. And that’s how I became a libertarian.

*Politics will surface from time to time in 365DOLF and in life. We speak so much about Republican or Democrat. Take today to look into a third party. Maybe like Penn, the Libertarian Party is for you.

Joel Osteen 1963

Image result for joel osteen

You have a choice, Osteen believes and teaches. You can have a bad attitude, or look from God’s perspective. Make the choice to have a good attitude.

After coping with the shock of losing his dad, Osteen says he experienced another shift.

“I felt that same feeling that said, ‘I’m supposed to step up and pastor the church.’ And, again, every thought said, ‘Are you crazy? You’ve spoken one time. You think you’re gonna get up there and pastor it?’ But I knew I was supposed to do it,” he says.

*Look from God’s perspective and have a good attitude today. God will let you know what you are supposed to do today. Have the confidence to do it.

Larry Tisch 1923
Image result for larry tisch

Larry Tisch was the ultimate value investor. He was a brilliant contrarian: He saw value where other investors didn’t — and he was usually right. He avoided anything that seemed remotely like a fad — from the Nifty Fifty stocks of the 1970s to the Internet stocks of the late 1990s. He looked at companies purely by the numbers — as he liked to say, “The numbers don’t lie.” And he thought constantly about risk. “He always wanted to know what the downside was,”

A contrarian investor enters the market when others are feeling negative about it. The contrarian believes the value of the market or stock is below its intrinsic value and thus represents an opportunity. In essence, an abundance of pessimism among other investors has pushed the price of the stock below what it should be, and the contrarian investor will buy that before the broader sentiment returns and the share prices rebounds.

IBM (NYSE:IBM) stock has been beaten down for some time. During the past five years, the average annual return was an awful 3.16%!

But it is important to note that IBM has some valuable core assets. Let’s face it, the brand remains top-notch in the tech industry. There is also an extensive global infrastructure and a broad array of software and hardware systems.

*Research and find something that everyone is “down on”, and invest in it. And remember, “The numbers don’t lie.”

Eva Mendes 1974 – watch Girl in Progress

The L.A.-born, Cuban-American actress also opened up on racism in the entertainment industry. “What makes it frustrating is when a director or a studio head doesn’t see me for the same part that they’ll see, let’s say, Drew Barrymore for,” she said. “Drew’s a great friend of mine. But it’s like, ‘No, we want more of an American type of girl.’ And it’s like, America has opened up. I’m an American girl, born and raised.” Still, she insists, being Cuban-American is “not as difficult as it is being an Asian girl.”

*You can watch Girl in Progress to get your Eva Mendes fix, but The Other Guys will make you laugh more.

Knute Rockne 1888

Image result for knute rockne

Be a renaissance man. Knute was a jock who loved sports and was passionate about football. But he cultivated his mind too. While a student at Notre Dame, he didn’t let his role as an athlete take away from his studies. A diligent student, Rockne’s average was a 90.52% (this was before the grade point system). He was equally adept as science (receiving a 97% in chemistry) as he was in English and philosophy (earning a 98% and 94% respectively). He also found time to serve as a yearbook editor and play the flute in the orchestra (if Knute Rockne played the flute, I may have to reconsider the manliness quotient of that instrument). Knute graduated magna cum laude from Notre Dame and was offered a job as chemistry assistant at the school, a position he took in addition to various coaching jobs.

Rockne’s first team went 3-1-2 in a season shortened by World War I, and he began upgrading the schedule the next year. The 1919 and 1920 teams were unbeaten, led by Gipp, a renegade who enjoyed pool, poker, partying and skipping classes. Though Rockne had a deserved reputation for toughness, his pragmatism helped him deal with Gipp’s escapades. Rockne called the all-purpose back “the greatest player Notre Dame ever produced.”

*Being a Renaissance man (or woman) is the whole point of why you’re still reading 365DOLF. Mind-Body-Soul! (money, entertainment, and food too). Strive to be the best person you can be.

Rebecca Gratz 1781

Rebecca Gratz believed that with an “unsubdued spirit” she could overcome all of life’s difficulties. A pioneer Jewish charitable worker and religious educator, Gratz established and led America’s first independent Jewish women’s charitable society, the first Jewish Sunday school, the Philadelphia Orphan Asylum, and the first Jewish Foster Home in Philadelphia. She surmounted the grief caused her by the deaths of many family members and loved ones, confronted Christian evangelism, and became a civic leader. Gratz’s accomplishments grew out of her own indomitable spirit and her commitments to both Judaism and America.

*Have an “unsubdued spirit” today so you can overcome all of today’s difficulties.

Garrett Morgan 1877

*Think about what your business will do to amaze people so business can boom.

Antonio Vivaldi 1678

‘The Four Seasons’ may well be his most famous piece, but Vivaldi wrote more than 500 other concertos for other instruments including mandolin, cello, flute, viola d’amore, recorder, and lute. Around 230 of these are for violin – he was, after all, a violinist, like his father.

If you think Herschel Walker is some kind of weight room warrior you would be wrong, Herschel has never been into weightlifting, all of his exercises are body weight exercises. He started doing sit-ups and push-ups as a kid, as many as 5000 a day and still to this day he does 750-1500 pushups every day as well as 3000 sit ups. He also mixes in 1,500 pull-ups, 1000 dips, and 1000 squats every day. For cardio he will run up to 8 miles and do sprints as well. He also does a regimen of martial arts and MMA after he has completed this workout every morning.

Chief Joseph 1840

It was that heartfelt outpouring of words that touched the hearts of people everywhere. It provided a stone to stand upon, a common ground that all could understand, no matter white or red. Joseph’s words created a tiny crack in the wall of fear and hatred, by showing the hunger and pain of his people. His words made everyone understand that we are all humans, all frail creatures who need the comfort of home and family. Not savages, not ruthless marauders, but flesh and blood with hearts that can break from pain.

For starters, says Tyler Florence, no more recipes. They don’t work for our modern lifestyle anymore.

The best advice his dad has passed along, he says, is to slow down and take the time to produce the highest quality product.

Make sure that this is going to be the absolute best that it can be because, once it’s out, there’s no taking it back.'”
