“Always assume that there is one silent student in your class who is by far superior to you in head and in heart.” This is the counsel Leo Strauss, among the most consequential teachers and scholars of political philosophy in the 20th century, offered an advanced graduate student who had asked for a general rule about teaching.

*This is good advice for me as a teacher, but all of us will be teachers at one point or another. So this is indeed good life advice from Leo Strauss.

Juan Pablo Montoya 1975

He is the only driver to win a CART Series title, the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Daytona, all in his first attempt.

“The more you drive, the fitter you get,” Montoya, who turns 40 in September, said. “When I’m at home in the off season, I probably ride about eight hours a week on the bike. I will do Pilates twice a week. I will do the gym a couple times. I will do a little swimming. You do a little bit of everything.”

George R.R. Martin 1948

The nefarious Faith Militant (a.k.a. The Sparrows) in HBO’s Game of Thrones has a rather well-known inspiration. In the show, the powerful King’s Landing cult violently punishes any perceived sin and is led by a mysterious and manipulative man called the High Sparrow. Author George R.R. Martin frequently uses events and ideas from European history for this A Song of Ice and Fire saga, and the Faith Militant is no exception. “The Sparrows are my version of the medieval Catholic Church, with its own fantasy twist,” Martin told EW

A more modern interpretation rejects the idea of physical torment and asserts that the torture of hell is mental anguish caused by separation from God.

Pope John Paul II “declared that hell is ‘not a punishment imposed externally by God’ but is the natural consequence of the unrepentant sinner’s choice to live apart from God” (ibid., p. 48). Still others have rejected the doctrine of hell outright and believe everyone will be saved.

*Should sin be violently punished? Should sinners pay for eternity? Is God merciful?  I would hope that God won’t punish people for eternity. Watch or better yet, start reading Game of Thrones.

Henry Samueli 1954

Talk to Broadcom’s Henry Samueli, and you get the sense of a man who knows exactly how lucky he is. The son of immigrant parents, Holocaust survivors, the current chairman and chief technology officer grew up stocking store shelves, but made good as an electrical engineer and university professor. And that was before he went on to co-found a multi-billion-dollar maker of broadband-communication chips.

*Understand how lucky you are. Take that luck and build on it towards your financial goals. Give back to those who aren’t as lucky.

One of the world’s most iconic movie stars, Sophia Loren has built a formidable acting career, effortlessly moving back and forth between major Hollywood films and Italian-based productions. She made history in 1961 as the first performer to win an Academy Award for a foreign-language role with Two Women, in which she stars as a strong-willed mother who braves an assault to save her daughter.

In Vittorio De Sica’s World War II classic, Cesira (Oscar winner Sophia Loren) and her thirteen-year-old daughter Rosetta must flee Rome during the war. As they travel to the village where Cesira was born, they are faced with trials that prove to be too much for both of them.

Upton Sinclair 1878 – Chicago Italian Beef Sandwich

Upton Sinclair was a famous novelist and social crusader from California, who pioneered the kind of journalism known as “muckraking.” His best-known novel was “The Jungle” which was an expose of the appalling and unsanitary conditions in the meat-packing industry. “The Jungle” was influential in obtaining passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act.

“I aimed at the public’s heart, and by accident hit it in the stomach.”

*I would suggest to read The Jungle while eating this sandwich, but you’ll need both hands and a bib for this Chicago Italian beef sandwich. Wait until after you eat before reading Upton Sinclair’s masterpiece of muckraking.

“Frankl,” says Jimmy Fallon. “Man’s Search for Meaning. I read that book while I was in the ICU—my doctor told me to read it. I highlighted quotes and things. I e-mailed all my friends. I’m like, ‘Dude, you have to read this book—I know the meaning of life.’ ”

Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfil the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual.

Ask yourself hour by hour whether you are staying true to what life expects from you. You may not be where you want to be in life right now but so what? It’s not all about you. What can you do for life? What can you do for others? Start reading “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Frankl.

Mario Batali 1960

Celebrity chef Mario Batali has agreed to whip up a $5.25 million payment to the captains, waiters and other workers at his restaurants who claimed they had been stiffed out of tips.

In 2017, Batali was asked to take some time off the show after several women came forward accusing him of sexual misconduct. Eater conducted a lengthy investigation and found that Batali’s misconduct spanned decades.

“I know my actions have disappointed many people,” said Batali after announcing he would also step away from his other business ventures. “The successes I have enjoyed are owned by everyone on my team. The failures are mine alone. To the people who have been at my side during this time — my family, my partners, my employees, my friends, my fans — I am grateful for your support and hopeful that I can regain your respect and trust. I will spend the next period of time trying to do that.”

“The secret to ageing is to remain interested and not look back. I know some things could have gone better, but at the time that was the best I could do.” And then he says something rather amazing: “I’ve never regretted anything in my life.” I guess getting into trouble doesn’t seem so terrible if you don’t care you’re there.

The von Bulow case was the dream of the media. It had all the ingredients to catch the imagination of a public addicted to soap-opera excesses: fabulous wealth, sex, drugs, aristocracy, servants, and all the other accoutrements of the international jet set. It contained many features of the classic mystery, including a dramatic piece of evidence: an incriminating black bag containing drugs and a syringe with an insulin-encrusted needle.

Take the Risk: In the end we only regret the chances we didn’t take
Dr. Carson explains that he could not operate in a field that requires cracking people’s heads open or operating on something as delicate as the spinal cord unless he was comfortable taking risks.  He has many years of experience weighing risks and applies his Best/Worst Analysis by asking himself the following four questions:

  1. What is the best thing that can happen if I do this?
  2. What is the worst thing that can happen if I do this?
  3. What is the best thing that can happen if I don’t do it?
  4. What is the worst thing that can happen if I don’t do it?

Human Growth Hormone (HGH): Another naturally occurring hormone, HGH is used by athletes to promote muscle growth and recovery. According to Larry Bowers, the science director of the USADA, there were no available tests for HGH at the time of Armstrong’s first retirement in 2005, so if Armstrong and his teammates consistently used them before that year, as the USADA claims, they could have avoided detection.

The use of performance-enhancing drugs shreds the fabric of sport, since it is the ultimate betrayal of a fellow competitor. But what is more relevant: Armstrong’s seven tainted Tour wins or the millions who found in him a reason to believe?

“No F*ckin’ Ziti?”

It was made clear how important food was to its characters back in the pilot episode. As Tony tells his mother, Livia (Nancy Marchand) that he expects her to be at A.J.’s birthday party with her baked ziti, she calls the house later, crying, to cancel. A.J. responds to the news appropriately frustrated, as he’s now expected to celebrate his birthday with no ziti.

“Best in the State, Far as I’m Concerned.”

It’s the last Soprano family meal we see them enjoy together. As Tony, Carmela, and AJ (Meadow is busy trying to parallel park outside) consult their menus, one thing unites them: a basket of onion rings. While theories abound to this day over the meaning of the show’s final scene, it’s good to remember that it was in these calm moments when he was surrounded by his family eating a meal that made Tony happiest. As AJ says when he paraphrases his father: “Focus on the good times.”

Warren Burger 1907

Image result for warren burger

In 1974, Burger wrote for a unanimous court in United States v. Nixon, which rejected Nixon’s invocation of executive privilege in the wake of the Watergate scandal. The ruling played a major role in Nixon’s resignation. Burger joined the majority in Roe v. Wade in holding that the right to privacy prohibited states from banning abortions. He later abandoned Roe v. Wade in Thornburgh v. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. His majority opinion in INS v. Chadha struck down the legislative veto.

Although Burger was a lifelong Republican, many of the landmark decisions issued during his tenure represented clear liberal victories. For example, In Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenberg Board of Education (1971), the Court issued a unanimous ruling supporting busing as a pragmatic approach to reduce de facto racial segregation in schools. However, Burger’s conservatism can be seen in opinions such as his concurring opinion in Bowers v. Hardwick (1986), which upheld a Georgia law criminalizing sodomy.

Dan Marino 1961

The legend: A drug rumor caused Dan Marino to slip to the 27th overall pick in the 1983 draft. The rumor was started by someone inside the NFL, perhaps someone in the Dolphins organization, to cause Marino to fall into a successful team’s lap.

The rumor was pervasive and convincing enough that former Steelers Coach Chuck Noll admitted in a 1992 Associated Press interview to passing on Marino specifically because of the rumor. The Steelers, of course, were close to the epicenter of all things Marino in 1982—Marino grew up in Pittsburgh and went to Pitt—at a time when being geographically close to a story made a big difference.

“I do a lot of cardio — treadmill and elliptical,” says Marino, noting that he trains with retired running back Terry Kirby, who played for the Dolphins from 1993-95. “It’s always good working out with someone else to help you push a bit. I try to do something every day, in the morning. [It gets] your day going.”

William Howard Taft 1857

“The funny part is that while Taft was president, the White House got a tub that was so big a president couldn’t possibly get stuck in it,” Carlson says. Indeed, just weeks after Taft’s 1908 election, the captain of a warship carrying the president-elect to inspect the Panama Canal re-quested a super-sized bathtub capable of holding the heftiest man ever to occupy the Oval Office. Since no “Taft-size” basin could be found, a Manhattan company specially crafted the largest solid porcelain tub ever made for an individual. It was more than seven feet long, 41 inches wide and weighed a ton—literally.

It was President Taft’s favorite food, and given that the White House had to custom-build a bathtub to accommodate his girth, you’ve got to respect the man’s opinion.

Tragedy Leads to Commitment
Sanger’s commitment to birth control sprung from personal tragedy. One of eleven children born to a working class Irish Catholic family in Corning, New York, at age nineteen Margaret watched her mother die of tuberculosis. Just 50 years old, her mother had wasted away from the strain of eleven childbirths and seven miscarriages. Facing her father over her mother’s coffin, Margaret lashed out, “You caused this. Mother is dead from having too many children.”

The first leadership lesson I learned from the founder of the birth control movement is:   All worthwhile accomplishments start with a vision. Not a small, incremental vision, but a bold, audacious, flaming red, bigger than yourself vision.

*Write down your bold, audacious, flaming red, bigger than yourself vision.

The one bright spot was Katie Lee, a college girl from Ohio whom he had picked up in the lobby of the Peninsula Hotel. After graduating, she moved into Joel’s house in the Hamptons, and in 2004, they married. Joel was 55, Lee 23 — just four years older than his daughter, Alexa.

They moved into a $4 million loft in Tribeca. Just months into the marriage, Joel was in rehab again.

After a stint at Betty Ford, Lee — herself an aspiring culinary star — encouraged him to get back out on the road, and he began playing live again. In 2008, while touring with Elton John, Joel kept seeing photos of Lee at premieres and gallery openings — and one in particular, of her dancing closely with another man at Art Basel in Miami.

“Those photos looked bad,” Lee told Schruers. She denied an affair.

As the marriage unraveled, Joel held out hope. He told Lee he wanted to go to a therapist. She began talking about furniture. “I realized, ‘It’s not going to happen. We’re over . . . Just don’t send me messages, don’t leave me cute little phone calls, don’t tease me, don’t f- -k with me, just end it. ’Cause I’m an old man now, a vulnerable man. Don’t do that to an old guy.’ ”

*Listen to a nice mix of Billy Joel and Amy Winehouse while making Katie Lee’s chicken and broccoli twice baked spaghetti squash. A wonderful meal on a day you are cutting carbs and sugars.

Nene Hilario 1982

Houston Rockets center Nene had a strange snafu on his new contract that ended up costing him $4 million.

Nene, who is 34 years old, reportedly agreed to re-sign with the Rockets on a four-year, $15 million deal this summer.

However, because of a little-known rule in the NBA’s CBA called the “over-38 rule”, Nene had to restructure the agreement and ended up re-signing on a three-year, $11 million deal.

The “over-38 rule” doesn’t allow players to sign deals longer than three years if they would be getting paid beyond their 38th birthday. Because Nene is 34, the four-year deal would have taken him past his 38th birthday.

An Alabama gym teacher brought the “whip/nae nae” into his classroom to get his elementary school students excited about working out.

*Try this “whip/nae nae” workout in honor of NBA power forward Nene (pronounced Nae Nae)

I believe the biblical definition of faith, that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. I don’t know how one navigates this thing called life without having abiding faith in something. There are some times in certain situations that you have to believe, even when there is no evidence. You have to believe even when there are no signs that something is going to work out.

*Have faith and truly believe that everything is going to work out today.

Tyler Perry Covers All of the Layaways at 2 Atlanta Walmart’s at a Cost of $434,000

Don’t quit your day job (and, while you’re there be excellent.) I know this is a two-for-one, but I couldn’t separate them. Mr. Perry shared that he quit a few jobs in his day, eh, okay several jobs to pursue his dream.  And to that point, he noted that he’s not suggesting that anyone just go out and quit their jobs, but instead recognize that you still have to earn a living.

*You still have to earn a living, so don’t quit your day job…yet. Once you do find a way to turn your passion into payday, quit your job as soon as you can. Go to a local Walmart and pay off someone’s layaway today.

With little formal education and having gone bankrupt twice before he was 30, Milton S. Hershey didn’t exactly start out as a brilliant success. But there might have been something in the water of rural Pennsylvania that gave Milton what was needed to make it big. He used his wits and instincts to become one of America’s wealthiest individuals, a successful entrepreneur and a generous philanthropist who touched countless lives.

*What a day of chocolate! Eat some Milton Hershey chocolate spiced muffins while watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Liquor is Quicker at NYLO’s Willy Wonka-Themed Cocktail Factory

Thanks to Cody Goldstein of Muddling Memories and the team at the New York City hotel NYLO, you can now experience all of the joys that Charlie Bucket and crew got to experience on their trip to the candy factory and boy, are those joys damn tasty.

Held in the LOCL Bar at NYLO Hotel, the Willy Wonka-themed Cocktail Factory is a pop-up bar designed to tap into your finest childhood memories (and get you buzzed at the same time).

Each drink at the bar is designed to resemble something from the books, ranging from drinks like “The Snozzberries Taste Like Snozzberries” (gin, Jägermeister, lemon, cinnamon foam, and snozberries, of course) to the “Factory’s Special Chocolate Blend” (hot cocoa, cinnamon, fluff, mint, and bourbon or vodka) to the Pièce De Résistance, “Goodie Goodie Gumballs,” which is made with tequila, St-Germain, bitter lemon, and white cranberry and is served in a freaking gumball machine. Eager drinkers will get their candy, nostalgia, and booze fixes all at the same time.

*Do your research and try to recreate some of these drinks to keep the Chocolate Day Party going.

Andrew Luck 1989

Image result for andrew luck

Best-selling sportswriter John Feinstein, over his 40-year career, has asked countless athletes the same question: What’re you gonna do when you’re done?

Typical answers: coach, talk sports on TV or radio, scout, etc. But Andrew Luck’s answer was anything but typical. In fact, Feinstein, in a piece for the Washington Post, said he’d never heard an answer like Luck’s before. Or since.

‘Honestly, I think I could be very happy teaching high school history.’

Andrew Luck

*As I was completing 365DOLF, Luck shockingly announced his retirement from the NFL at the age of 29. He could not take the pain anymore. With millions in the bank, teaching high school history could be fun. It’s not as much fun with hundreds in the bank.

Jesse Owens 1913

Image result for jesse owens

At the Berlin 1936 Olympics, Hitler planned to show the world that the Aryan people were the dominant race, Jesse Owens proved him wrong and sealed his place in Olympic history by becoming the most successful athlete of the 1936 Games. Owens also became the first American to win four track and field gold medals at a single Olympics (100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and long jump), a record that stood unbroken for 48 years.

Riley started a rigorous training program for Owens in special morning sessions before school. Within a year, Owens was running the 100-yard dash in eleven seconds and in 1928 he set two world records for his age group in the high jump, at six feet, and the long jump, at twenty-two feet, eleven and three-quarters inches. Under Riley’s instruction to run as though the track were on fire, Owens also improved his times on the track.

*Run as many 100 yard dashes as you can before work or school this morning.

He established a formula where catchy pop/soul melodies were blended with sweeping arrangements and his husky growl. The style quickly moved to self-parody and the sexual content of the lyrics grew.

The Heart and Soul of Reach Out WorldWide

“Paul wasn’t someone who would write a check and put his name on an organization; he was the heart and soul of Reach Out WorldWide. Paul was the first one in and the last one out, he led by example and his hard work and dedication inspired everyone who had the privilege of working with him.

Having a will is only the start.  A revocable living trust is the best estate planning tool for most people.  Walker’s will left all of his assets to a trust he created, which means the probate process will be much simpler and less onerous than it could have been.

A revocable living trust allows you to provide for the distribution of your property after your death. When you set up a trust, you help your heirs and family avoid the probate courts, which must review and authorize any will. “Revocable” means that you can change the trust at any time, or cancel it altogether. Creating a trust is a straightforward matter of preparing and signing a document, which contains certain provisions and conforms to the law.

*Take today to make a revocable living trust. This was very wise of Paul Walker who died much too young.

Emmy Rossum 1986 – watch The Phantom of the Opera

I got mono once when I was 18 or 19 and I had to go on a press tour for Phantom of the Opera. I ate garlic every single day — a whole head of roasted garlic. I love it, but I’m sure it was not pleasant for those around me because it starts to come out of your skin.

Be careful how you treat those who are different.

Say what you will about the Phantom, but the movie makes it obvious that he wasn’t exactly born evil.  It was the rejection & torture he faced from his own mother & clan that serve to mold him into the beast he eventually becomes.

*If you want something lighter, watch Emmy Rossum in Shameless. But her role in Phantom of the Opera is much better. Lay off the garlic.

Ewing, Mutombo and Yao order coconut curry prawn, General Tso’s chicken, fried rice with shrimp, Mongolian beef, garlic basil prawn, Szechuan prawn and white rice.

In November 2011, global humanitarian, recently retired NBA star and future Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Yao Ming announced the establishment of his new Napa Valley winery: Yao Family Wines. His dream of creating a classic Napa Valley winery that would become a legacy for future generations of his family became a reality.

Paul Bear Bryant 1913

Bear Bryant won six national championships at the University of Alabama and retired with a 323 wins.

He grew to an imposing 6’1″ and 180 pounds by age 13, earning his famous nickname by agreeing to wrestle a bear from a traveling circus.

But I learned that the lessons my mama taught me were always right. It don’t cost nuthin’ to be nice. It don’t cost ‘nuthin’ to do the right thing most of the time, and it costs a lot to lose your good name by breakin’ your word to someone.

*Be nice today. Do the right thing today. Don’t break your word today.

Ludacris paid for this woman’s groceries — and now she wants to pay it forward

Since losing her husband to brain cancer in 2014, she said, she has struggled to make ends meet, taking care of four rescued dogs, two rescued cats and her elderly, blind chicken named Dixie.

Throughout all of her financial hardships, Jaramillo said, she has believed in the power of paying it forward. She is urging everyone to follow Ludacris’ example.

You and I may never reach Ludacris’ level of fame, but having a celebrity profile and making money allows a person to do amazing things that are near and dear to their heart, just like Ludacris. As a business owner, it absolutely helps to have a loyal following or a fan club of our own so we can also create wealth, connections and relationships to do what is near and dear to our hearts in an increasingly bigger way.

*Buy a fedora today in honor of 2 Hall of Fame coaches sharing a birthday and a long gone coaching fashion style.

There are hats on the heads of more than half the coaches pictured in both halls of fame, as well as sports coats, ties and even the occasional bow tie completing the look. Some looked so distinct – Tom Landry of the Dallas Cowboys and Alabama coach Paul “Bear” Bryant come to mind – that even decades later, you could identify them just by seeing their profiles.
