Comfort doesn’t always equal growth.

*Say goodbye to a bad habit today and hello to something new – like deliberate practice.

Harry Houdini 1874

Image result for harry houdini

As a teenager in New York City, Houdini was a member of several athletic organizations, competing in bicycle races, foot races, and boxing matches. He would plunge into the fast-moving East River to get his swimming fix, and running a ten-mile circuit in Central Park was an effortless feat for him. He tried out for the U.S. Olympic swim team as a teen (he didn’t make the cut), by 17 he was already an amateur boxer, and by the time he turned 18, he had beaten Sidney Thomas, a British racing champion, in a 20-mile race.

Deliberate Practice Is the Key to Greatness, Conquer Fear and Pain, Keep Pushing Your Limits

*Pick one of Harry Houdini’s early obsessions as a workout today. Swimming, boxing, bicycling, running, or any combination. Conquer pain and keep pushing your limits.

“Alas and did my Saviour bleed?
And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred Head
For such a worm as I?”

And when they reached the 3rd line of the last verse:

“Here, Lord, I give myself away;
‘Tis all that I can do.”

I surrendered myself to the Saviour, and my very soul was flooded with celestial light. I sprang to my feet, shouting “Hallelujah.”

*Surrender yourself to your Savior today and your soul will be flooded with celestial light. Don’t be afraid to shout “Hallelujah!”

Jessica Chastain 1977 – watch Zero Dark Thirty

The 2012 war film Zero Dark Thirty made many viewers uncomfortable, including actors Martin Sheen and Ed Asner. The two, along with Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences member David Clennon, claimed the film promoted torture and started a campaign against it during the 2013 Academy Awards season. Zero Dark Thirty received five nominations, but only tied with Skyfall for Best Sound Editing.

*Watch Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty and decide for yourself if it deserves an award or to be boycotted.

Peyton Manning’s preparation for the game also includes his nutrition habits. No matter when the game started, Manning would eat the same pregame meal, which includes grilled chicken, a plain baked potato with a side of broccoli, a bowl of pasta with marinara sauce, and a couple of Gatorades.

*You could go healthy and eat his normal pre-game meal or be glutinous and eat his true loves – Papa John’s pizza, Budweiser, and a chicken parmigiana sandwich. “Chicken parm you taste so good.”

Wernher Von Braun 1912

Image result for wernher von braun

Wernher von Braun has the prestige of actually taking mankind from the simple beginnings of rocketry all the way to the moon and the planets.  His name is almost synonymous with rocket science.  He is an icon of the space age.

Eventually humans will spread into the cosmos at large. One cannot set a timeline, but by 3001 “interstellar humanity” will likely follow. We do not know what surprises and challenges we will find. But they will be there and humans will revel in them. That is the nature of humans with their inbuilt curiosity and penchant for exploration, one might say the very definition of what it is to be human.

*Here is a good conversation starter for you today. By the end of this year, your name will become synonymous with great conversation. You will be an icon of the water cooler.

Brandon Marshall 1984

When I first heard the term “mental health,” the first thing that came to mind was mental toughness. Masking pain. Hiding it. Keeping it inside. That had been embedded in me since I was a kid. Never show weakness. Suck it up. Play through it. Live through it.

Now, I realize that mental health means the total opposite.

*See your therapist today. It is not weakness – it is showing strength. Maybe your therapy could be tossing around the football with a close friend.

“She said, ‘Sometime soon, I’m going to be earning more money than I need, and I would like to help people. I work with people who make the movies, the ones who have all of those little jobs without which there couldn’t be movies. They are so important, and they do such wonderful work. When they get sick and need medical help, some of them don’t have the financial means they need, so I want to see that they have the help they deserve. I want to pay for a room in the hospital and other costs.’

*You might feel like the “low man” on the totem pole, but you’re probably not. Find out if anyone who makes less than you, needs help at work and provide that assistance today. It will warm your soul.

*Hopefully you’ve earned the right to be considered but keep fighting for that right to be chosen.

Nothing heats up a Cold War quicker than an attempt on the president’s life, and when Ronald Reagan was shot on March 30, 1981, there was a real fear that the Soviets had struck. The Americans tackled the issue in the season one episode “In Control,” throwing the characters into the middle of the frenzy.

Pat Robertson 1930

Image result for pat robertson

Robertson presented himself as a shepherd of souls, but in his quest for temporal power, he led his flock astray and left their faith to wither. This isn’t the story one usually hears about the rise of the religious right, but for Christians, it is perhaps the more important one.

*Don’t put your faith in one man to guide you to the promise land. Guide yourself there through education and soul searching.

Rick Harrison 1965

Of course with the good comes the bad. Harrison admits that he is not immune to mistakes and “in business you have to be innovative, but so are crooks.  A couple of times I got lazy and didn’t pay attention to new and improved fakes, so a few times I lost some big money on Rolex’s.”

Never Stop Learning

“You know the greatest danger facing us is ourselves, an irrational fear of the unknown. But there’s no such thing as the unknown– only things temporarily hidden, temporarily not understood.”

Captain Kirk may have a reputation as a suave ladies’ man, but don’t let that exterior cool fool you. Kirk’s reputation at the Academy was that of a “walking stack of books,” in the words of his former first officer, Gary Mitchell. And a passion for learning helped him through several missions. Perhaps the best demonstration of this is in the episode “Arena,” where Kirk is forced to fight a Gorn Captain in single combat by advanced beings. Using his own knowledge and materials at hand, Kirk is able to build a rudimentary shotgun, which he uses to defeat the Gorn.

*Have a passion for learning as you watch Captain Kirk and the whole gang in the original Star Trek.

Gary Oldman 1958

“To become Churchill, it’s like a big sausage-maker. You put all the research in the machine and hopefully out comes the sausage at the end of it,” said Oldman, who has previously brought real-life figures like Sid Vicious, Beethoven, and Lee Harvey Oswald to the screen.

Don’t Give Up

According to Winston Churchill, “continuous effort, not strength or intelligence, is the key to unlocking our potential.” The thing with individuals today is that they want instant success. However, success is a process that needs to be carefully tendered. You can start small and work your way up to the top. Even in your small continuous efforts, you will succeed.

*Watch Oldman in the Darkest Hour and remember – never surrender!

“Radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam in a country like the United States.” Those words were not spoken by Osama bin Laden but by comedienne turned talk-show hostess Rosie O’Donnell on a nationally broadcast program in October. Her statement generated a wide range of reactions. A new nationwide survey of that reaction, conducted by The Barna Group, suggests that although few Americans would challenge her right to make such statements, just as few share her point of view.

*So, do you challenge her right to make this statement? Do you share her point of view?

The mind that has been restored to prominence by the cognitive revolution . . . executes cognitive processes. It perceives the world, organizes sense data into meaningful wholes, processes information, and so on. In fact, the mind seems to be merely the double of the person whose mind it is. It is a replica, a surrogate, a doppelganger. Take any sentence in which ”the mind” is said to do something and see if the meaning is substantially changed if you substitute ”person.” . . .

*You control your mind, not the other way around.

This is life at “Camp Riley,” a nickname for Knicks Coach Pat Riley’s grueling eight-day training camp. Riley was so eager to get started, he put the team on the floor to start practice last Friday at 12:01 A.M. So much for easing into camp gradually.

William Jennings Bryan 1860

Despite decades spent in the public eye as a political figure, being named one of the five greatest U.S. Senators of all time by a Senate Committee led by John F. Kennedy, and having a statue of his likeness displayed in U.S. Capitol, Bryan preferred the pulpit to the stump, educating to legislating. He saw himself more fit for the Chautauqua Circuit, where he spoke on virtue and spirituality, and educated audiences about political issues.

William Jennings Bryan was hard-working, courageous, and noble in moral principles as well as friendly, charming, and optimistic. He spoke for the common man, and so he became known as “The Great Commoner”.

Elias Hicks 1748

Elias declared to the English visitor that he could not see how the cruel persecution and crucifixion of Jesus Christ could expiate his sins. It was grace of God which gave power to live a sober, righteous, and godly life. Hicks told Anna Braithwaite, “So long as I feel that peace, there is nothing in the world that makes me afraid, as it respects my eternal condition. But if any of my friends have received any known benefit from any outward sacrifice I do not envy them their privilege.” “But surely,” he added, “they would not be willing that I should acknowledge as truth, that which I have no kind of knowledge of.”

If Die Hard was to be a success, the studio knew they needed a bona fide action star in the part, so they set about offering it to a seemingly never-ending list of A-listers of the time. Rumor has it that Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford, Robert De Niro, Charles Bronson, Nick Nolte, Mel Gibson, Richard Gere, Don Johnson, Burt Reynolds, and Richard Dean Anderson (yes, MacGyver!) were all considered for the role of John McClane. And all declined it.

Grover Cleveland 1837

Image result for grover cleveland

During the campaign, Cleveland’s record of honesty and virtue was in danger of being besmirched by a smear campaign launched by his opponent. James Blaine, the Republican candidate, accused Cleveland of fathering a child out of wedlock, pointing to the fact that the Democratic candidate paid child support to Maria Halpin in 1874 as evidence. Cleveland’s retort was characteristically simple: “tell the truth.” Ultimately Blaine did, and it was revealed that Halpin had had relations with several married men, one of whom was a close friend of Cleveland’s. Cleveland, a bachelor, agreed to claim paternity so that the other men could avoid being accused of adultery. The personal virtues that Cleveland cultivated over his lifetime were encapsulated by his dying phrase: “I have tried so hard to do right.”

President Grover Cleveland becomes the first sitting president to marry in the White House on this day in 1886.

Cleveland entered the White House as a bachelor and left a married man and father of two. His new wife was a beautiful young woman 27 years his junior named Frances Folsom.
