ANTHONY WEINER APPRECIATION DAY
Drew Pinsky 1958
“I heard you read a lot. What should I read?” He said he’d been studying a stoic philosopher named Epictetus and that I should check it out. He also recommended a biography of Theodore Roosevelt that remains one of my favorites (TR it turns out was also a fan of Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius).
Always think about death
“Let death and exile and every other thing which appears dreadful be daily before your eyes; but most of all death: and you will never think of anything mean nor will you desire anything extravagantly.” – Epictetus
If you always think about death — would you waste 10 years of your life working hard, to earn a lot of money, to buy a big house, and a shiny BMW?
No. If we think that we’re going to die soon — we would never waste our time on superfluous wealth that won’t really help us. Rather, we would focus our time doing our creative work, creating art, and spending time with our loved ones.
Remember you must die, and you will die (soon). What would you not get distracted by if you realized you would die soon?
*Think about death today. Knowing that you will die, focus your time doing creative work and spending time with your loved ones.
Tom Watson 1949
I really had no fitness regimen at all early in my career. My fitness schedule was basically dictated by how many golf balls I hit. I practiced quite a bit when I was younger. Between that and walking six miles a day over 30 tournaments a year, I felt that gave me plenty of exercise.
*Walk 18 holes of golf today.
Lewis Howard Latimer 1848
Throughout the rest of his life, Latimer continued to try to devise ways of improving everyday living for the public, eventually working in efforts to improve the civil rights of Black citizens within the United States. He also painted portraits and wrote poetry and music for friends and family.
*Continue to devise ways of improving everyday living for the public. Paint and write poetry for friends and family today.
William Lyons 1901
It was almost by coincidence that the young Bill Lyons should happen to reside across the street from his future business partner, William Walmsley. It was at this point that the young Mr. Lyons displayed the first of his three greatest talents. For Bill Lyons exhibited a phenomenal business sense, or certainly so it seemed for a lad of 20 without formal training. He convinced Walmsley that he could increase production and profits with a few of his ideas. One of which was to secure a larger workspace, as Walmsley’s garage was far too small for the big dreams of production Bill Lyons envisioned.

Beyonce Knowles 1981
“We all experience pain and loss, and often we become inaudible. My intention for [Lemonade] was to create a body of work that would give a voice to our pain, our struggles, our darkness, and our history. To confront issues that make us uncomfortable.”
Don’t waste time.
“You have the same number of hours in your day as Beyoncé.”
The above quote went viral because it’s catchy and true. According to Forbes, Beyoncé’s net worth in 2015 is $250 million, making her the 49th richest self-made woman in America. And she’s only 33 years old. Between her music, endorsements, business prowess, and acting career, Queen Bey has proven to women worldwide that it is possible to build an empire regardless of “isms” (sexism, racism, whatever other ism you can think of). Now we must pose the question: What do you do on your free time?
*Listen to Beyonce while you’re working on building your empire.
Paul Harvey 1918 – wild rice soup
A longtime lover of history — a love cultivated by a single mother who raised him after his policeman father was killed — Harvey made waves early, getting his first radio gig at just age 14. And even though he would have plenty of mentors along the way, his work was most often honed by his wife.
*Enjoy Paul Harvey’s favorite wild rice soup… good day. Wash it down with a tall glass of Beyonce lemonade.
