Your personal happiness matters, but shouldn’t be your sole focus in life.

Happiness, she seems to believe, is secondary to being a caring and motivated citizen. When a person focuses on making the world a better place, happiness can be achieved as easily, if not more easily, than when happiness is a main focus.

Notable quote: “You’ll notice that I haven’t talked about love. Or about happiness. I’ve talked about becoming — or remaining — the person who can be happy, a lot of the time, without thinking that being happy is what it’s all about. It’s not.”

The Susan Sontag Foundation relies on donations from many generous individuals and organizations. Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to support the Foundation’s activities. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the Susan Sontag Foundation and mailed to the following address:

*Don’t focus on love or happiness. Instead, focus on becoming a person who can be happy, a lot of the time, without thinking that being happy is what it’s all about. Start by trying to make the world a better place.

Albert Pujols 1980

The future Hall of Famer enters his 17th major league season with 591 career home runs, five years remaining on one of the richest contracts in baseball history and one very simple approach to doing his job.

The quiet that surrounds his greatness indeed is partly of his own making. Pujols attacks his job with the ethic and grim fastidious of a coal miner.

Albert begins every workout with 30 minutes of cardio on the elliptical machine as a general warm-up. He finishes each day with 10-15 minutes of full-body stretching.

*Pick any workout but start it with 30 minutes on the elliptical machine and end it with a 10-15 minute stretch. Get to the batting cages and try hitting 500 home-runs.

Dian Fossey 1932

Dian Fossey was a passionate woman and that passion helped to save the mountain gorilla species. She once said, “When you realize the value of all life you dwell less on past and concentrate more on the conservation of the future.”

Adopt a gorilla today!

Just like our gorilla protection teams, you can help save gorillas every single day. Symbolic gorilla adoptions have a meaningful and immediate impact in the lives of the planet’s last wild gorillas. You can ensure gorillas are protected all day, every day by adopting a new family member today!

*We are still in January and you have already been given a lot of opportunities to donate time and money to charitable causes. Pick one that you like or one that strikes a chord with you and donate as much as you can. Unless you’re stinking rich, then donate to them all.  No money? Find a charity in 365DOLF that provides ways to donate time and energy. Like Dian Fossey suggests, concentrate on the conservation of the future.

Lin-Manuel Miranda 1980

Lin-Manuel Miranda knows something about money.

The New York Times reported in June 2016 that the 37-year-old creator of the hit Broadway musical ‘Hamilton’ was positioned to make more than $6 million that year alone, thanks to his multiple roles (author, actor, rights-holder) in the production.

Growing up, I was always cautious about spending. In fact, I was so nervous about incurring debt that I didn’t open my first credit card until age 28, after my first show had opened on Broadway. As a result, even though I had enough money in the bank, I didn’t have sufficient credit history to purchase my first apartment. My father had to help me buy it by co-signing the mortgage.

Miranda’s story perfectly illustrates one of the greatest challenges of good credit: You never think about it until you need it. And if you never think about it, you probably don’t have it.

*Shop around get the best credit card with rewards. Use that credit card for everyday purchases and pay it off every month. Do NOT just pay the minimum and let it add up. This is easier said than done and I wish someone would have given me this advice about 25 years ago.

Aaliyah 1979

Brooklyn-born Aaliyah Dana Haughton started voice lessons shortly after she learned to talk. Determined to be a star, she signed a contract with Jive Records at the age of 12 and came to popular acclaim in 1994. On her way home from a music video shoot in 2001, a plane crash killed Aaliyah and eight members of her film crew. She was 22 years old at the time of her death.

*Remember that age ain’t nothing but a number as you listen to Aaliyah – may she R.I.P.
