Zora Neale Hurston 1891
There Is No One Way To Belong To A Race
Their Eyes Were Watching God was initially criticized for not being “serious.” In other words, it didn’t fit into the prescribed format for racial uplift literature of the time. But years later, it has gone down as one of the most important novels of all time — proving that a culturally accepted racial experience can never be all-inclusive.
Belonging to a cultural identity can be a wonderfully empowering feeling — but on the other hand, if you don’t feel it reflects you accurately, then it can be incredibly isolating. You are not obliged to define yourself and your racial experience through anyone else’s eyes.
*Realize that it’s OK to be proud of your race, but that doesn’t mean that you have to subscribe to the “norm” of your ethnicity.
Lauren Cohan 1982
Never go the easy route. “I like a challenge. I get such a sense of satisfaction when I push myself beyond what I thought I could do. That’s what any HIIT or interval training does for me. If I sprint at 9.5 for two minutes, I feel really good.”
Pick a role model.
*After watching The Walking Dead yesterday, maybe you want to make Lauren Cohen (Maggie Greene) your role model. Or possibly you’d like to be as fit as yesterday’s birthday boy Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon). Try a HIIT workout and/or sprinting at 9.5 for 2 minutes, like you’re being chased by a zombie. Cohen suggests having a role model but they don’t have to be famous. Choose someone to “be like” this year. Push yourself beyond what you think you can do and never go the easy route. This is the beauty of 365DOLF, you have a role model provided for you every day.
Katie Couric 1957
Couric began with the exhilarating promise of technology and the potential for change in the world, but she ended with a warning to not lose your soul in the process.
Vatican warns mobile phones are bad for the soul
The Vatican has warned that our obsession with modern technology, such as the internet and mobile phones, is not leaving people enough time for spiritual pursuits.
*If you are not already, follow at least one uplifting handle as part of your social media intake. Start following a daily bible verse or daily prayer and actually stop to read it each day. Make enough time for your spiritual pursuits.
Christian Louboutin 1963
But when customers seem willing to spend whatever it takes, it’s hard to imagine why any shoemaker would refrain from jacking up their prices.
*Take today to reevaluate the luxury items that you buy. Maybe having a pair of Louboutins is good for your soul, but how much is that affecting your money goals for this year? Do the head to toe check and see how much money you’re spending on clothes. Dress for success – yes, but don’t go broke in the process.
Nicolas Cage 1964 (Charles and Donald Kaufman) – watch Adaptation
Do I have an original thought in my head? My bald head. Maybe if I were happier, my hair wouldn’t be falling out. Life is short. I need to make the most of it. Today is the first day of the rest of my life. I’m a walking cliché. I really need to go to the doctor and have my leg checked. There’s something wrong. A bump. The dentist called again. I’m way overdue. If I stop putting things off, I would be happier. All I do is sit on my fat ass. If my ass wasn’t fat I would be happier. I wouldn’t have to wear these shirts with the tails out all the time. Like that’s fooling anyone. Fat ass. I should start jogging again. Five miles a day. Really do it this time. Maybe rock climbing. I need to turn my life around. What do I need to do? I need to fall in love. I need to have a girlfriend. I need to read more, improve myself. What if I learned Russian or something? Or took up an instrument? I could speak Chinese. I’d be the screenwriter who speaks Chinese and plays the oboe. That would be cool. I should get my hair cut short. Stop trying to fool myself and everyone else into thinking I have a full head of hair. How pathetic is that? Just be real. Confident. Isn’t that what women are attracted to? Men don’t have to be attractive. But that’s not true. Especially these days. Almost as much pressure on men as there is on women these days. Why should I be made to feel I have to apologize for my existence? Maybe it’s my brain chemistry. Maybe that’s what’s wrong with me. Bad chemistry. All my problems and anxiety can be reduced to a chemical imbalance or some kind of misfiring synapses. I need to get help for that. But I’ll still be ugly though. Nothing’s gonna change that.
*Just look how ridiculous the first lines of dialogue are. It’s purposely crammed together to make your eyes cross while you’re reading it. Hopefully after watching Adaptation, you’ll see how ridiculous your self-doubt and self-loathing are too.
Millard Fillmore 1800 – ham with macaroni
Beef stew, mock turtle soup, fish, ham with macaroni, duck, chicken, pigeon, and larded sweet breads were the favorite foods of the 13th president of the United States. I bet that his wife taught him how to make this creamy ham and macaroni recipe.
While at New Hope Academy, Fillmore found a kindred spirit in Abigail Powers. Even though she was his teacher, she was only two years older than him. They both loved learning. However, they did not get married until three years after Fillmore joined the bar.
*Enjoy this creamy ham and macaroni in honor of our 13th and best named president – Millard Fillmore.
